Kidnapped UNIJOS graduate beaten and forced to renounce Jesus in Nigeria video.
NEWS:
A recently freed University of Jos graduate was beaten, threatened and forced under duress to renounce Jesus in a kidnapping video recorded after he was abducted while traveling from Plateau State to Kaduna State, Nigeria.
The victim was identified in multiple reports as John Arum Azi, also referred to as John Arum. He was described as a recent UNIJOS graduate who was awaiting National Youth Service Corps mobilization. Some reports called him a student, while others described him as a graduate. The consistent account across the reporting is that he had ties to the University of Jos and was abducted during a trip from Jos toward Kaduna.
The video published from captivity shows Arum lying face-down in an outdoor area while armed abductors assault him. A heavy stone is placed on his back during part of the footage. One of the men points a rifle toward his head while the victim is beaten. The images also show him pleading for help and speaking about the ransom demand.
In the footage, Arum says he and others were kidnapped while traveling from Jos to Kaduna. He says seven people were taken and that the abductors were demanding money before he could be released. The initial ransom figure reported in connection with the video was 30 million naira.
The same video also records religious coercion. Arum is forced under duress to deny Jesus, then cries out “Jesus” while being beaten. The assailants react by intensifying the assault and referring back to the denial they had forced from him. The footage supports that the victim was physically abused and coerced in connection with his Christian faith, but it does not independently verify the identity, ethnic background or organizational affiliation of the attackers.
Reports based on family and associate accounts said Arum had traveled to Kaduna after being invited to repair musical equipment. His employer was quoted as saying Arum worked as a technician who repaired, serviced and installed musical equipment, including keyboards and car audio systems. According to that account, Arum’s phone later became unreachable, and his elder brother informed the employer that he had been kidnapped.
A University of Jos alumni group publicly called for his release after the video circulated. Its leadership described Arum as one of its own and urged security agencies to act. That statement confirmed concern from people connected to the university community, but it was not a police report, rescue report or court document.
A later report said the abductors released a second video showing Arum at gunpoint. That later footage reportedly included a direct death threat if ransom demands were not met. The ransom figures in later coverage differed. One report said the demand had been reduced from 30 million naira to 4 million naira. Another later account said the ransom demand stood at 10 million naira. Because no official record confirmed a final ransom amount, the exact demand at the time of release remains unclear.
Arum was later released and returned to his family. His release was confirmed publicly by the global president of the University of Jos alumni association, who said he had safely returned home. Another report said a separate release video showed Arum weak, exhausted and wearing dirty clothes after captivity, with a man speaking in Hausa announcing that he had been freed.
No verified official account has confirmed whether security operatives rescued him, whether ransom was paid, or whether any suspect was arrested. Published reports after his release said the circumstances of his freedom remained unclear. One report also said the condition of the six other people reportedly abducted with him was unknown at the time of publication.
The case remains defined by three confirmed elements from the available record: a video showing Arum being beaten and threatened in captivity, reports that he was abducted on the Jos-Kaduna highway with other passengers, and later confirmation from the alumni association that he was released and reunited with his family.
