Police constable dies by suicide while on duty in Khulna, Bangladesh.
NEWS:
A railway police constable died by suicide while on duty at the Railway Police Lines in Khulna, Bangladesh, early Saturday, April 18, after a self-inflicted gunshot from his issued rifle, police said.
The officer was identified as Samrat Biswas, a constable with the Khulna Railway Police. Most published accounts identified him as 27 years old, though at least one local report gave a different age. Police identified him as the son of Shailen Biswas, from Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj district.
The incident happened in the armory, also described as the magazine guard area, at the Khulna Railway Police Lines in the Sonadanga area of the city. Police accounts and local reports placed the time in the early morning, generally between about 00:4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. One initial report used a later approximate time, but the accounts reviewed consistently placed the death during his early-morning duty period.
CCTV footage from the area shows the constable using his issued rifle on himself while on duty, according to the reports reviewed. The footage directly supports the core account of the death, but it does not establish why he acted, what happened before the recorded moment, or whether any specific personal dispute caused the incident.
Railway Police Superintendent Ahmed Mainul Hasan said Biswas had been assigned to duty in the armory area when the incident took place. He said the constable had joined the Khulna Railway Police unit on November 3, 2025, and was known for good conduct in service.
Senior Railway Police officials and officers from Sonadanga Police Station under Khulna Metropolitan Police went to the scene after receiving information about the incident. Police recovered the body and arranged post-mortem procedures. Family members were informed.
Biswas’ wife, Puja Biswas, was also identified in multiple reports as a police member posted in Satkhira district. That detail has been reported as part of the investigation background, but police had not publicly established it as the cause of the death.
A three-member committee was later formed to investigate the reported suicide. The committee was headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Shafiqul Islam. The other members were Railway Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Ferdous Alam Khan and Detective Branch officer-in-charge Abu Hasan. The committee was asked to submit its report within four working days.
Investigators also sent the mobile phone used by Biswas to the Criminal Investigation Department in Khulna for examination. Sonadanga Police Station SI Suman Howlader was identified as the investigating officer, and the formal investigation began the day after the death.
Later reports said investigators were examining whether personal or marital issues may have contributed to the incident. That remains an investigative line, not a confirmed motive. One later account quoted police as saying there was no specific lead yet on why Biswas died by suicide. An unnatural death case was filed with Sonadanga Police Station, according to later reporting.
The case also appeared in later coverage about mental health pressure among police personnel in Bangladesh. Police officials and mental health specialists cited workload, family pressure, financial hardship, poor living conditions and lack of institutional counseling as issues affecting lower-rank police members. Those broader factors were discussed in connection with police suicides generally, but they do not prove the motive in Biswas’ death.
No public official investigation report was found in the available searches. The most concrete post-incident developments found were the formation of the probe committee, the CID examination of the phone, the formal police investigation and the unnatural death case.
