Woman stabbed to death in front of child in Dong Thap, Vietnam.
NEWS:
A woman was stabbed to death late on February 24, 2026, in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam, in an attack that occurred in front of a young child and was captured by security footage that quickly spread online.
The video, a little over two minutes long, shows a shirtless man wearing jeans confronting a woman outside a home at night. The footage shows the man repeatedly striking her with what appears to be a knife as she cries out and tries to defend herself. A small boy stands close by, crying and pleading for the violence to stop. The child repeatedly calls out “ba oi” and begs the attacker to stop hurting his mother. The audio, more than the visuals, is what many viewers describe as the most disturbing part, because it records a child trying to talk an adult out of killing someone.
Investigators in Dong Thap identified the suspect as Nguyen Viet Thanh, born in 1988. The victim has been publicly identified by initials as T.T.N., born in 1983, a resident of An Phuoc commune. Reported investigative information describes Thanh and the woman as having been in a relationship and living together like a married couple, but the relationship ended around November 2025. Authorities say the suspect continued contacting her and trying to reconcile after the breakup.
According to the investigative timeline described in public reporting, Thanh went to the area near the woman’s home at about 00:9:00 p.m. on February 24. He allegedly hid his motorcycle, took a knife from the vehicle, and waited near the house. Around 00:9:30 p.m., investigators say he saw the woman arrive with another man and then rushed toward her and began attacking. The woman tried to run into the road, where she fell, and the suspect continued the stabbing until she lost consciousness.
After the attack, authorities say Thanh went to local police and surrendered. The woman was taken to a hospital for emergency care but later died from her injuries.
The child’s presence has fueled widespread anger and heartbreak, and it also raises difficult questions about the trauma a child can carry after witnessing lethal violence at close range. In the video, the boy uses language that suggests he understands he is trying to prevent something irreversible, even though he has no power to stop it. Mental health experts often warn that children who witness severe violence involving a parent can develop lasting symptoms, including nightmares, panic responses to certain sounds, difficulty concentrating, emotional numbing, and intense guilt. Some children also develop a constant fear that another caregiver will disappear, which can affect school performance, relationships, and long term health.
Authorities have not publicly released identifying details about the child, including age or custody arrangements, and those details are typically protected to reduce the risk of further harm. What is publicly evident from the recording is that the child remained nearby during the attack and was audibly distressed throughout.
Police have said the case remains under investigation, but the legal process has already moved forward. Investigators initially held the suspect for questioning, then later announced that the case had been formally opened, the suspect had been charged, and he had been placed in pretrial detention as the investigation continues. In Vietnam, homicide cases can carry severe penalties if proven in court, and investigators typically focus on scene evidence, forensic findings, witness statements, and video records as they build the case file.
The killing also fits a broader pattern seen across many countries, violence from a current or former partner remains one of the most common and most dangerous threats women face. Globally, public health estimates indicate that roughly one in three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, often involving an intimate partner. Fatal attacks are frequently preceded by controlling behavior, repeated contact after a breakup, threats, or escalation when a partner tries to leave. Advocates stress that early intervention, community awareness, and accessible services are critical, especially during the period when a relationship ends and tensions rise.
For many viewers, the Dong Thap video is not only evidence in a criminal case, it is also a reminder of what children can be forced to carry when violence happens at home. As investigators complete their work and the courts take over, the most urgent questions will center on accountability for the suspect, and the long term support needed for the child who witnessed his mother’s final moments.
