At least five killed in Guayaquil mass shooting caught on video, Ecuador.

NEWS:

At least five people were killed in a mass shooting in Guayaquil, Ecuador, after armed men opened fire on a group near the intersection of Gómez Rendón and Guerrero Valenzuela on Sunday night, April 19, 2026.

Initial reports placed the death toll at six. A later report that identified victims listed five people killed and two others wounded. Because those accounts differ, the confirmed minimum is at least five dead, while early accounts from the scene put the number at six.

The attack happened between about 00:8:30 p.m. and 00:9:00 p.m. in the center-south area of Guayaquil. Video from the scene shows the shooting unfolding in the street, with armed attackers firing at people in and around a vehicle. The footage directly documents the violent attack, but it does not establish the motive, the identity of the gunmen or what happened immediately before the shooting began.

The first accounts said the attackers arrived in a vehicle, got out and opened fire with rifles. A later report said the gunmen arrived on motorcycles. That detail remains inconsistent across accounts. What is clear is that multiple people were hit as the attack spread beyond the immediate point where the first shots were fired.

Several victims were near a gray Chevrolet vehicle and outside a liquor store when the shooting occurred. Later reporting said the group had been watching a soccer match between Barcelona Sporting Club and Macará on a large screen set up in the area. Earlier accounts said some of the victims had been drinking inside a parked vehicle.

Reports from the scene said three people died at or near the location. Initial accounts said three others died while being taken to hospitals. A later report said two wounded people were moved by civilians on motorcycles toward medical facilities and that firefighters found several victims already without vital signs when they arrived.

Two brothers traveling in a taxi were reported wounded after being struck by gunfire. Residents described them as people caught in the attack rather than targets. No public evidence reviewed for this article confirms who the intended target was.

The victims later identified were Kevin Fabricio Zambrano Zambrano, 22, Carlos Julio Zambrano Lascano, 23, Jordan Steven Aroon Sánchez, 23, and Jeremy Adriano Barreiro Carrera, 23. A fifth person was identified only as a Venezuelan citizen whose name had not been released in the report.

At the scene, investigators found a Chevrolet vehicle, spent shell casings, deformed bullets and a Samsung cellphone. Later reporting said 59 spent casings and three deformed bullets were collected. The number of casings indicates sustained gunfire, but the available public information does not confirm how many weapons were used.

One account said police were investigating possible links between the attack and criminal groups operating in the area. No public finding reviewed for this article confirms a specific gang, motive or suspect. No confirmed arrest tied to this case was found in the reliable reports reviewed.

The shooting happened one day after another deadly attack in Guayaquil’s Barrio Cuba area, where five people were killed, including a 7-year-old child. The two attacks raised the number of people killed in violent incidents in Guayaquil that weekend to at least ten, and possibly eleven if the higher initial toll from Gómez Rendón and Guerrero Valenzuela is confirmed.

Another attack was reported early Tuesday, April 21, during a wake held several blocks from the original shooting scene. That later attack left one man dead and two women wounded. Reports said the people gathered there were mourning one of the victims from the Gómez Rendón and Guerrero Valenzuela shooting.

Guayaquil has remained one of Ecuador’s central flashpoints for violent crime. Public security data and local reporting show hundreds of killings in the city in 2026, amid repeated armed attacks, targeted shootings and criminal disputes. That broader context does not establish the motive in this case, but it explains why the attack is being treated as part of a wider pattern of lethal violence in the city.
