Man slits wife’s throat at gas station in Maharashtra, India.

NEWS:

KARMAD, India. A 27-year-old woman working at a gas station in Maharashtra was killed in a knife attack on April 9, after a man arrived on a motorcycle, grabbed her near a fuel stand and cut her throat in an attack recorded by CCTV.

The victim was identified as Pooja Gawande, also rendered as Puja in some English-language reports. She worked at Shivsamarth Petrol Pump in the Karmad area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, on the Sambhajinagar-Jalna Road. Local reports said she had been working there for about one and a half months to support her two children.

Police and local reports identified the attacker as Satyam Raosaheb Gawande. Reports differ slightly on his age, listing him as either 27 or 28. Police identified him as her husband, while a later court update described Pooja as his divorced wife and said the couple had separated through a bond-paper agreement earlier in 2026.

The attack happened around 00:12:30 p.m. while Pooja was on duty. CCTV footage shows the attacker coming close to her at the pump area before the assault. Local accounts said he arrived on a motorcycle, parked near her work position, grabbed her as she tried to get away, stabbed her in the back and then cut her throat with a sharp knife.

The gas station owner reportedly tried to intervene, but the attacker threatened him with the knife before fleeing on the motorcycle. The video records the violent act at the station, but it does not establish the full background, motive or prior relationship history by itself.

Police were called to the scene and Pooja was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where doctors declared her dead. Officers, including local police officials, later carried out the scene procedure at the gas station.

Police arrested Satyam Gawande within about two hours of the killing. According to later local reporting, he fled toward Kachner through the Pimpriraja route before being caught in the Kachner area. Police also seized the knife believed to have been used in the attack and a motorcycle with the registration number MH-20 BH 9281.

A court later remanded Satyam Gawande to three days of police custody. That update also said Pooja and Satyam had married at Arya Samaj Bhavan in Alandi in November 2025, then separated in February 2026 through a bond-paper divorce agreement. The reported reasons for the split included repeated assaults, suspicion and his opposition to her working.

An earlier police account attributed the conflict to Satyam wanting to remarry and asking Pooja to leave him, which she refused. That detail is attributed to police reporting and should not be treated as something visible in the CCTV footage. The video proves the attack itself, not the motive.

Pooja had previously been married to Sudam Gawande in 2017. Local reports said Sudam died by suicide on January 12, 2023. She had a son and a daughter from that marriage. After marrying Satyam in 2025, she reportedly lived for a period in Kumbhephal before moving to Karmad following disputes with him.

One local report, citing Pooja’s friend Chhaya Wange, said Pooja had complained against Satyam about three months before the killing and had again gone to Karmad police station on April 7, two days before the attack. The friend alleged that timely police action could have saved Pooja’s life. That allegation has been reported as the friend’s claim and was not confirmed in the available material by a primary police document.

The same local reporting said relatives from both sides initially refused to conduct the last rites after the killing. Police later performed the funeral at Begumpura crematorium in the presence of Pooja’s two brothers.

The available reporting establishes the core facts of the attack, the victim’s identity, the arrest, the court custody update, the seizure of the weapon and motorcycle, and the existence of CCTV footage. Details about the motive, prior complaints, divorce circumstances and alleged police inaction depend on statements attributed to police or to people close to the victim.
