Man shot dead during street fight in Coquimbo, Chile.

NEWS:

A man was shot dead during a street fight in the Tierras Blancas sector of Coquimbo, Chile, in a homicide captured on video and later presented as evidence in court.

The killing occurred on April 20, 2026, at about 00:8:30 p.m., at the intersection of Carlos Rosas and Marta Elba Miranda streets, in the Cital neighborhood of Tierras Blancas. Initial reports identified the victim as a 26-year-old man.

Early accounts said the victim entered the SAR health center in Tierras Blancas with a gunshot wound to the chest and no vital signs. Later prosecutorial information placed the fatal shooting at the scene of the confrontation and said the victim died after being hit in the chest.

The video linked to the case shows a physical confrontation in a public street before the shooting. The footage confirms the violent sequence, including the fight and the fatal gunshot. It does not, by itself, establish the full motive, the prior relationship between the men involved, or every event that happened before the recording began.

Prosecutors later formalized charges against a suspect identified by the initials E.N.G. The formal accusation says the accused had a firearm and compatible ammunition without legal authorization when he and another still-unidentified man approached the victim, who was alone in the street.

Under the prosecution’s account, the unidentified man began the physical attack, punching and kicking the victim. Prosecutors said the accused then positioned himself at close range, in front of the unarmed victim, and fired into his chest with intent to kill. The victim died as a result of the gunshot.

The case was investigated by the Fiscalía ECOH team with homicide detectives and forensic personnel. Police work after the killing led to the identification and arrest of the alleged shooter. Earlier reporting said the suspect had prior police records, but the later official account focused on the formal charges, the firearm allegation and the pending forensic work.

The defense challenged the preventive detention order after the formalization hearing. The Court of Appeals of La Serena upheld the ruling by the Coquimbo Guarantee Court, meaning the accused remains jailed while the investigation continues.

The appellate court found there were sufficient grounds at this stage to support the suspect’s alleged participation. The evidence considered included a direct eyewitness account, a hearsay witness and the video presented during the hearing.

The investigation period was set at 150 days. Pending work includes ballistic, chemical and photographic examinations, the autopsy report and other court-ordered reports.

No public official record reviewed for this article identified the second man accused of starting the physical assault. No confirmed motive was released. No public conviction has been issued. The accused remains an imputado, a formally charged suspect, while the homicide case proceeds through the Chilean criminal justice system.
