Worker’s nose severed in gas cylinder explosion at workshop in Pará, Brazil.
NEWS:
A 40-year-old worker was seriously injured after a gas cylinder exploded at a workshop in Itaituba, Pará, Brazil.
The accident happened on Thursday morning, April 16, at a workshop located near Km 3 of the Transamazônica highway. Preliminary information said another worker was using a cut-off grinder to cut a gas storage cylinder when the container exploded.
The injured worker was identified as William Robert Lago de Alcântara. He was standing nearby when parts of the cylinder and fragments from the cutting disc struck him.
The blast caused severe facial injuries, including the loss of his nose. He also suffered exposed fractures in his legs and one arm, according to the reported medical details.
Video of the incident shows the explosion during the work at the shop. The footage confirms the violent blast, but it does not establish what safety measures were taken before the cylinder was cut or whether the container had been properly emptied.
Fire Department teams were called to the scene and provided pre-hospital care. William was then taken to the Hospital Regional do Tapajós, where he was evaluated and remained under medical treatment.
The case involved a gas cylinder reportedly being cut with a power tool, a combination that can create an extreme hazard if flammable residue or pressure remains inside the container.
The Civil Police of Pará said in a statement cited in the initial report that, up to that point, the case had not been officially registered at the police station responsible for the municipality.
