A 34-year-old father of three was killed and beheaded during an attack at his home in the Bokutuyaya area of Mamadala South, Ambalantota, Sri Lanka, on the night of May 11, 2026. The man’s father-in-law was also attacked and hospitalized.

Police initially identified three people as suspected participants in the killing. All three were arrested on May 12, one by officers from Ambalantota Police and two by the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit. A fourth man, later described as the main suspect in the case, was arrested on May 21.

The footage accompanying this report records the fatal assault at the property. The images directly establish that the attack occurred, but they do not independently establish the attackers’ identities, the reported revenge motive or any connection between the killing and an earlier criminal case.

A later police statement described the victim as having been shot and dismembered during the attack. After the killing, his severed head was taken from the residence and placed on a statue at Mamadala Junction.

Initial accounts described three people arriving at the victim’s home armed with sharp weapons. The victim was attacked inside the residence before his body was dismembered. Police did not publicly specify whether the gunshot injuries or wounds inflicted with sharp weapons were the immediate cause of death.

The victim’s father-in-law was injured during the same incident and taken to Hambantota Hospital. Early reports said he had been shot and was in serious condition. The later police statement confirmed that he had been assaulted and hospitalized but did not publish further medical details.

Investigators also recovered a locally made firearm that had reportedly been abandoned at or near the residence. Police believed the weapon had been brought to the scene by the attackers. No publicly released ballistic findings established how the firearm was used or whether it caused the victim’s fatal injuries.

Police described the killing as retaliation for a triple homicide reported in the Aalagoda area of Mamadala on February 2, 2025. The man killed in the May attack had previously been arrested as a suspect in that case, held in remand custody and released on bail in late March 2026.

His status as a suspect in the earlier case did not amount to a conviction. No final judgment establishing his guilt in the triple homicide was publicly identified before his death.

The earlier triple killing followed a long-running dispute between rival groups allegedly involved in the illegal liquor trade. Investigators said six people entered a residence in Mamadala at about 8 p.m. on February 2, 2025, and attacked three men with sharp weapons.

One of the victims died at the property. Two others died after being taken to Ambalantota Hospital. Five suspects were initially arrested in connection with that case. Subsequent court proceedings placed three adult suspects in remand custody and sent a 13-year-old suspect to a juvenile detention facility.

Police later said the May 2026 killing was carried out in revenge for those three deaths. That motive is an investigative conclusion attributed to authorities. It is not something that can be determined from the attack footage alone.

The official arrest chronology states that one suspect was captured by Ambalantota Police on May 12. Two additional suspects were arrested the same day by the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit. Police said all three were residents of the Ambalantota area.

Early updates did not fully agree on the number of people in custody. One initial report mentioned a single arrest, and another follow-up reported two suspects. The later police statement confirmed that three suspects had been arrested on May 12.

A subsequent account said two of the suspects had been found hiding in the Lunugamwehera area. The three men were brought before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court and ordered held in remand custody until June 4.

Police continued searching for another man accused of assisting or supporting the attack. Officers arrested him in the Mamadala area on the night of May 21 after receiving information about his location.

The fourth detainee was described as the main suspect and as a person already wanted under several court warrants in unrelated criminal cases. Investigators alleged that he had aided or facilitated the killing. That allegation had not been proven in court at the time of the reported arrest.

Police recorded a statement from the fourth suspect and produced him before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court. The publicly available case information reviewed for this report did not provide a later judgment, final list of charges or trial outcome for the four arrested men.
