Yemeni government-aligned forces have accused the Houthis of using an AI-generated voice recording to impersonate Lt. Gen. Tareq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh as Houthi fighters advanced on the strategic Red Sea port of Mocha.
The allegation emerged during the fighting that ended with the Houthis taking control of Mocha on September 10. Saleh commands the UAE-backed National Resistance Forces, which had used the city as a major base on Yemen’s western coast. His military media said an audio message circulated during the offensive had been fabricated with artificial intelligence and falsely presented as an order from the commander.
Disputed audio spread as defenses around Mocha collapsed
The recording purported to carry Saleh’s voice telling units that battlefield conditions required a withdrawal. It circulated while Houthi forces were pushing through positions held by the National Resistance and other government-aligned forces.
Saleh’s side later rejected the recording as fake and warned that statements attributed to him should be considered authentic only when released through official National Resistance military channels. A Mocha-based television outlet also described the clip as an AI fabrication intended to mislead the public and undermine morale.
What remains unclear is whether the recording actually changed events on the ground. Government-aligned forces did withdraw from Mocha as the Houthi offensive intensified, but no independent evidence has established that the disputed audio caused that retreat. The recording itself has also not been publicly subjected to an independent forensic analysis confirming how it was produced.
That distinction matters because battlefield information moves quickly during an offensive, particularly when units are receiving orders through phones, radios and messaging platforms. A convincing fake command does not need to fool every soldier to create confusion. But in this case, the available reporting supports an allegation of attempted deception, not a proven causal link between the recording and the fall of the city.
Mocha’s capture raises the stakes around Bab al-Mandeb
Mocha sits on Yemen’s Red Sea coast near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The route is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints and carries a significant share of trade between Europe and Asia.
The Houthi capture of Mocha was one of the movement’s largest territorial gains since the 2022 truce largely froze the main front lines of Yemen’s civil war. The advance also brought Houthi forces closer to positions overlooking Bab al-Mandeb at a time when regional conflict is already placing pressure on commercial shipping and energy routes.
Independent reporting on the offensive confirms that Houthi forces seized Mocha and pushed farther along the western coast. Those reports, however, do not establish that an AI-generated voice message was responsible for the withdrawal of Saleh’s forces.
A separate AI weapons case surfaced in northern Yemen
The voice-cloning allegation appeared at the same time as a separate report showing how artificial intelligence is being used in weapons development inside Yemen.
Anthropic said it disrupted a weapons-engineering cell based in northern Yemen that used Claude Code to develop guidance, navigation and control software for guided rockets and missile programs. According to the company, the actors worked on a tactical guided rocket, a multi-stage ballistic missile project with a stated range above 2,000 kilometers, and an R2000 missile family that included a hypersonic-glide variant.
Anthropic did not identify the cell as the Houthis. The company also said it had no evidence that the actors successfully fielded an operational weapon. It did report that the group carried out a guided-rocket test that appeared to fail and later returned to Claude while trying to diagnose the problem.
The two cases are therefore separate. One is an allegation from Yemeni forces that an AI-cloned voice was used as a psychological-warfare tool during the battle for Mocha. The other is a documented case of a weapons-development cell in northern Yemen using an AI coding system for missile-related engineering. Together, they illustrate how artificial intelligence is beginning to appear in both the information and technical sides of modern conflict, even when the precise actors and battlefield effects remain disputed.
