A tiger killed a horse and dragged it toward the forest in broad daylight near the Garjiya area of Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, prompting forest officials to increase patrols and warn people to stay away from the nearby woodland and Jhula Pul area.

The attack was reported near the Jhula Pul crossing along National Highway 309, close to the former gate of the Garjiya tourism zone and near a populated area on the edge of the Corbett landscape. Local reports placed the incident at about 1:30 p.m. on August 18, 2026.

The video shows the tiger dragging the horse away

Footage that circulated widely online shows the tiger gripping the horse around the neck and hauling the animal toward vegetation while people nearby shout and react. The clip was shared on X by journalist Gargi Rawat on August 19 and was subsequently carried by multiple Indian news outlets.

The footage documents the tiger moving the horse away, but it does not establish why the animal approached so close to the road and settlement. Claims about hunger or the tiger’s motivation cannot be determined from the video alone.

Forest Department increases surveillance

Regional reporting said Forest Department teams increased patrolling after receiving information about the attack and began monitoring the tiger’s possible location and movements.

Ramnagar Forest Division Range Officer Krishna Singh Mehra urged people to exercise caution and avoid entering the forest or moving toward the Jhula Pul side while the tiger was active near human habitation. Officials also advised people against gathering in areas where the animal might be present.

The location is significant because the crossing and surrounding Garjiya area see regular movement by local residents and visitors. The Garjiya zone is part of the wider Corbett Tiger Reserve tourism landscape, while the nearby Garjiya Devi temple also attracts visitors.

Wildlife movement near populated areas remains a safety concern

The incident illustrates the safety challenges that can arise where tiger habitat, roads, settlements, livestock and tourism activity meet. Corbett Tiger Reserve says its veterinary and quick-response teams are involved in wildlife rescue and the management of human-wildlife conflict across the reserve.
