Cedar Rapids, Iowa – On August 30, 2022, officers from Cedar Rapids were dispatched to 5560 6th St SW. after service calls about violent domestic issues. Officers found a male subject – later identified as 22-year-old William Rich – who brandished a gun and refused their orders to obey. Following protocol, the officers fired their firearms at the subject. The video shows police officers finding Rich who is holding a knife before a fight breaks out. The cops yell for Rich to come back and shoot him after he moves towards them with a knife. Then Rich gets up and walks towards the cops again with the knife still in his hand. Officers yell for Rich to get down before the second round of shots is fired. Officers shot Rich following protocol after he refused to obey orders. Rich suffered fatal injuries as a result of the police officer involved in the shooting. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident. Investigator Christopher Christy and Sergeant Bryson Garringer have been identified as the officers involved in the incident. They were placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol.
