Motorcyclist killed after hitting car door and being run over by pickup in Araguaína, Brazil.
NEWS:
A 57-year-old motorcyclist died after hitting an opened car door, falling into the road and being run over by a pickup truck in Araguaína, in Tocantins state, Brazil, on Saturday, April 18.
The victim was identified as Fabiano Miguel dos Santos. Police said the crash happened at about 00:3:40 p.m. on Rua 49, in the Nova Araguaína sector, and involved three vehicles.
Security footage recorded the sequence. The video shows the motorcyclist traveling along the street as the door of a parked car opens into his path. The motorcycle hits the door, the rider loses balance and falls into the roadway. Seconds later, a pickup coming in the opposite direction runs over him.
The footage directly shows the impact with the car door, the fall and the pickup striking the rider. It does not show what the driver of the parked car saw before opening the door, and it does not establish whether the pickup driver had enough time or space to avoid the collision.
According to the Military Police, the parked vehicle was a passenger car driven by a 31-year-old man. Local reporting later identified it as a Toyota Etios. Police said the motorcycle’s handlebar hit the opened door, causing the rider to fall.
The motorcycle was identified in later local reporting as a Honda Pop 100. The pickup was identified as a Fiat Strada. Police said the pickup was being driven by a 45-year-old man and was traveling in the opposite direction when it hit the motorcyclist.
The Mobile Emergency Care Service was called to the scene, but emergency workers only confirmed the rider’s death at the site. Technical police carried out procedures at the scene, and the body was removed by the Medical Legal Institute in Araguaína.
The Tocantins Public Security Secretariat said the case was registered at the 5th Civil Police Service Center in Araguaína. The body remained at the Araguaína IML unit awaiting family members after the crash, according to the information reported from the secretariat.
The drivers involved were taken to the police station, gave statements and were released, according to the police account reported after the crash. Local reporting said both drivers remained at the scene and provided assistance.
No public material reviewed confirmed criminal charges against either driver. No official document reviewed stated that alcohol, speeding, mechanical failure or intentional conduct had been established as a cause.
The confirmed facts are the recorded collision with the opened car door, the motorcyclist’s fall, the pickup running over him, the death at the scene, the identification of the victim, the response by emergency and forensic teams, the police registration in Araguaína and the release of the involved drivers after statements.
