Teacher collapses while singing for students and dies later in Arjona, Colombia.

NEWS:

A social studies teacher collapsed in front of students while singing during a Teacher's Day celebration at a school in Arjona, Colombia, and died after being transferred to a hospital in Cartagena.

The incident occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Institución Educativa Concertación Carolina Gamero Pérez in Arjona, Bolívar.

The teacher was identified as Orlando Marrugo Zúñiga, who taught social studies and was also active in cultural activities in the municipality.

Students had organized a Teacher's Day tribute for members of the school's faculty. Reports from Arjona said the event was prepared by 11th-grade students and included music and messages honoring the teachers.

Marrugo took a microphone and sang for the students during the celebration. Multiple accounts identified one of the songs as the vallenato track "Sin más palabras."

Video published with this article directly records the final moments before his medical emergency.

The footage shows Marrugo standing in front of the students with a microphone as people clap along with his performance. After finishing the song, he pauses, becomes unsteady and suddenly collapses to the floor.

People nearby immediately move toward him to help.

The video establishes the collapse itself. It does not establish the medical condition that caused it, and it does not show Marrugo dying at the school.

That distinction is important because some later headlines described him as having died in front of his students. More detailed reporting from Arjona said he remained alive after the collapse and received medical treatment.

Marrugo was first taken to the Hospital Local de Arjona.

Local reports said doctors there determined that he had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke. Because of the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to a higher-complexity medical center in Cartagena.

He died in Cartagena on Saturday, May 16.

No publicly available hospital statement, medical report or family statement located for this article definitively established the formal medical cause of death.

That leaves an important discrepancy in published accounts.

Some reports described the emergency as an apparent cardiac arrest and raised the possibility that unusually hot weather in Colombia's Caribbean region may have contributed to the episode.

Other reporting closer to Arjona attributed the collapse to a cerebral hemorrhage diagnosed after he reached the local hospital.

The heat explanation was based on speculation circulating after the death and was not confirmed by Marrugo's family, the school or a health authority. It therefore cannot be treated as an established cause.

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Marrugo suffered a sudden medical collapse during the school celebration, was hospitalized, transferred to Cartagena because of the severity of his condition and died the following day.

Marrugo had taught social studies at several educational institutions in Bolívar. Reports said he had previously worked at the Instituto Bolivariano before joining the Carolina Gamero school.

His work extended beyond the classroom.

He was a founding member of the Colectivo Académico Cultural Utopía, an organization involved in academic and cultural activities in Arjona. People who worked with him described his interest in vallenato music, local culture and community events.

He also participated in gatherings and helped organize academic and cultural activities at the Centro Cívico Julio Gil Beltrán Simancas.

Marrugo's funeral was held on Sunday, May 17, at the cemetery in Arjona. Students, colleagues, relatives and other members of the community attended his burial.

After his death, organizers announced that the third Encuentro Académico-Cultural in Arjona, scheduled for July 4, would be held in his memory.

The security footage remains the clearest direct record of what happened inside the school. It shows a teacher performing for his students during their tribute, losing his balance and collapsing as those around him rush forward to assist him.

It does not establish that he died at the scene, nor does it establish whether cardiac arrest, heat exposure, a cerebral hemorrhage or another underlying medical event caused his death.
