Motorcyclist runs red light and dies after slamming into Tesla in Mexico City, Mexico.
NEWS:
A motorcyclist died after running a red light and crashing into the side of a white Tesla at a signalized intersection in Mexico City on the night of Saturday, May 9, 2026.
The fatal motorcycle crash occurred at the intersection of Barranca del Muerto and Periférico Sur in the Merced Gómez neighborhood of Álvaro Obregón. Initial reports placed the collision at approximately 11 p.m., with some accounts giving a more precise time of about 00:11:05 p.m.
A recording made from another vehicle captured the entire collision.
The footage begins with vehicles waiting on Barranca del Muerto. When the traffic signal changes to green, the Tesla and other vehicles begin moving through the intersection.
The motorcycle then enters the crossing from the perpendicular roadway after the signal for its direction has turned red. The rider does not stop before entering the intersection.
The motorcycle strikes the right side of the Tesla near the front section of the vehicle. The impact launches the rider into the air and throws him hard onto the pavement. The motorcycle separates from him and slides farther along the roadway.
The rider's helmet also comes off during the collision. The recording shows the physical sequence clearly, but it does not provide enough information to calculate the motorcycle's exact speed.
Emergency personnel and Mexico City police were called to the scene. Paramedics reportedly found the motorcyclist without vital signs and pronounced him dead at the location.
Police closed the intersection while forensic personnel documented the crash scene, examined the vehicles and removed the body.
The Tesla driver stopped after the impact. Accounts differed regarding what happened to her immediately afterward. Some reports stated that she was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. Others said she was taken before the Public Prosecutor's Office to provide a statement. Another account indicated that she received medical attention before being questioned.
No confirmed information identifying the motorcyclist was released. Reports also offered conflicting estimates of his age, ranging from his mid-20s to approximately 40 years old.
Early accounts of the collision incorrectly suggested that the Tesla driver had run the red light and struck the motorcycle.
The video contradicted that initial version. It shows the Tesla advancing after its traffic light turns green and the motorcycle crossing into its path against a red signal. Later coverage adopted the sequence visible in the recording.
The footage establishes that the motorcyclist violated the traffic signal immediately before the collision. It does not, by itself, establish criminal liability or resolve every legal question connected to the crash.
Prosecutors reportedly opened an investigation to review the recording, traffic signals, witness accounts and forensic evidence. The footage was expected to be included in the investigative file used to determine legal responsibility.
No arrest or criminal charge was announced in the initial reports.
A follow-up published on May 11 again reported that the motorcyclist had crossed against the red light before striking the Tesla. It did not identify an arrest, formal charge or completed prosecutorial finding.
As of July 30, 2026, no publicly reported court filing, charging decision or final investigative report tied specifically to the collision had been announced.
