The decomposing body of a newborn boy was found on Sekilak Beach in Batam, Indonesia, with his umbilical cord still attached, prompting police to investigate where the child came from and whether he was alive or already dead when he entered the water.

The body was discovered on the afternoon of May 20, 2026, along the coast of Sekilak Beach in Batu Besar, Nongsa District. Several children who were swimming and playing near the shore noticed what initially appeared to be a doll at about 00:5:30 p.m.

They alerted nearby residents and the local neighborhood leader, Efendi. After approaching the object, residents realized it was the body of an infant and contacted Nongsa Police.

Video recorded at the scene shows the baby's body lying on the beach. The umbilical cord remains visibly attached. The footage confirms the condition and location in which the body was found, but it does not show who placed the baby in the water, how the child died or whether anyone deliberately killed him.

Nongsa Police officers and an Inafis forensic identification team arrived at approximately 6 p.m. and examined the scene. The body was then transported to Bhayangkara Hospital of the Riau Islands Police for medical and forensic examination.

Nongsa Police Chief Kompol Eriman said the infant was male and appeared physically complete and developed enough for birth. The body was already decomposing when discovered.

Police initially estimated that the newborn had been dead for approximately two to three days before being found. Investigators said the umbilical cord remaining on the body was consistent with a very recent birth.

Another police official, Nongsa Criminal Investigation Unit chief Ipda Reyhan, said officers were trying to establish the baby's identity and locate his parents. Investigators were also examining the cause of death and the circumstances that led to the body reaching the beach.

Police did not initially conclude that Sekilak Beach was the place where the baby had been abandoned. The condition and position of the body led investigators to suspect that it had been carried by ocean currents from another location before washing ashore.

At that stage, authorities had not determined whether the newborn was alive when he was placed or thrown into the water, or whether he had died beforehand. Investigators were waiting for forensic findings before making that distinction.

A subsequent police update on June 3 provided additional findings from the examination.

Eriman said investigators continued to believe the baby had been discarded somewhere other than Sekilak Beach and later carried to the shoreline by the sea.

The newborn had a severe injury to the head and a broken leg. According to Eriman, investigators believed those injuries occurred as the body was carried by the current and struck rocks along the coastline. That explanation was a police assessment, not a finding establishing how the baby originally died.

The later medical information also indicated that the baby's body was fully developed and that he had been born approximately two to three days before being discovered.

The umbilical cord had been cut unevenly. Police said the irregular cut suggested it may have been severed by someone without professional medical training.

No publicly verified finding reviewed for this case established the newborn's cause of death, identified the person who gave birth to him or determined who put the baby into the water.

There is a discrepancy in published accounts concerning the discovery date. Multiple reports published immediately after the incident, along with the date attached to the amateur video, identify Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as the day the body was found. A later June 3 report listed May 22. The contemporaneous accounts consistently support May 20.

Police were still investigating the origin of the newborn and searching for the person or people responsible for abandoning him as of the June 3 update. No later verified public report located for this case announced an arrest, identified the parents or established whether the infant had been alive when he entered the water.
