Store robbery suspect shot and hit by car during escape in Botucatu, Brazil.

NEWS:

A robbery suspect was shot by a merchant and then hit by a car while trying to flee after a grocery store robbery in Botucatu, in the interior of São Paulo state, Brazil, on Friday, April 17.

Security footage shows the suspect inside the store wearing a helmet and clothing that covered much of his face. The video shows him moving through the business during the robbery, while people inside appear to comply. Separate footage from the street shows the man leaving the store and running away before he is shot and then struck by a passing vehicle.

According to accounts citing the police report, the suspect entered the grocery store in the Jardim Brasil neighborhood with what was later identified as a fake gun. He allegedly threatened employees, took five cellphones and cash from the register, then left the business and tried to escape.

The stolen phones were described in published accounts as three iPhones and two Samsung devices. The items and the money were later recovered and returned to the victims, according to reports based on the police record.

The store owner reacted after the suspect left the business. Reports citing the police record said the owner had a CAC registration, a Brazilian classification for collectors, sport shooters and hunters. He fired four shots at the suspect in the street, according to those accounts.

The video from outside the store shows the suspect being hit during the escape sequence and then struck by a car traveling on the road. The footage also shows municipal guards arriving shortly afterward. The video confirms the visible sequence in the street, but it does not independently establish the legal status of each shot, the driver’s intent, or every detail of what happened inside the store before the street footage.

The suspect was arrested in the act by the Municipal Civil Guard and taken for medical treatment. Published accounts said he was hospitalized at the Hospital das Clínicas de Botucatu under police escort after the shooting and collision.

Reports differed on the suspect’s age. The version reproduced from the G1 report identified him as a 30-year-old man. Other accounts citing police identified him as 33 years old. Because no public primary police document was found in the searches reviewed, that age discrepancy remains unresolved in the public record.

One later local account said the suspect had undergone surgery, was stable and remained under escort, but that detail appeared in a single later report found during the review. The same later account said he would be transferred after medical discharge, but no public official custody update was found to confirm the transfer.

No public material reviewed confirmed charges against the store owner. No public material reviewed identified the driver who hit the suspect or stated that the driver acted intentionally. The available video shows the impact by the vehicle, but the reviewed reporting did not establish whether the driver had time to react or whether any traffic offense was alleged.

No defense statement for the suspect was found in the reviewed reports. One report said attorneys linked to earlier cases involving the suspect were contacted and did not respond.

The confirmed elements available from the video and the reports are limited to the recorded robbery, the suspect’s escape, the merchant’s armed reaction outside the store, the suspect being hit by gunfire, the vehicle impact, the arrival of municipal guards, the arrest, the recovery of stolen items and the suspect’s hospitalization under escort. The remaining legal questions depend on the police investigation and any later court filings not found in the public searches reviewed.
