An elderly man was killed and a woman was badly injured after a car veered into a pedestrian area in Chimbote, Peru.
The crash happened at the intersection of Avenida Marginal and Montevideo Street, in the P.J. San Pedro sector of Chimbote.
The man who died was identified as Santos López Pantaleón. Local reports differed on his age, citing him as either 76 or 80. The injured woman was identified as Rosa Hilario Vásquez, 64, described in local reports as a teacher.
Video footage from the area shows a car moving at speed before losing control and leaving the roadway. The vehicle enters the pedestrian area and strikes the two victims. One of them was seated outside a home or on a low concrete wall, while the woman was walking through the area.
The footage confirms the vehicle leaving its lane, entering the pedestrian space and hitting both people. It does not establish every action taken by the driver before the car lost control, or the complete traffic sequence before the recording begins.
Santos López Pantaleón died after the impact. Rosa Hilario Vásquez was seriously injured and taken for medical care. Local medical information cited in reports said she suffered multiple injuries and a head trauma.
The driver was identified as Carlos Fernando Romero Yarleque, 58. Police detained him after the crash. He was reported to be under investigation for negligent homicide and personal injuries.
The vehicle involved was identified as a Mazda Familia DX station wagon with license plate C2W-615.
Preliminary accounts said the driver lost control after trying to avoid another vehicle. Later reports said the investigation also cited the conditions in which he was driving, including that he allegedly did not have a driver’s license. Other reports said the vehicle’s technical inspection was not current.
A later court-related update said a judge ordered nine months of preventive detention for Carlos Fernando Romero Yarleque while the investigation continues. That measure is procedural and does not represent a final conviction.
