Mother and daughter killed after motorcycle brakes in front of container truck in Samarinda, Indonesia.
NEWS:
A mother and daughter were killed in a motorcycle crash involving a container truck in Samarinda, Indonesia, after the motorcycle moved ahead of the truck and then slowed in the same lane, according to the reported police account and video of the incident.
The fatal crash happened on Tuesday, April 14, on Jalan Nusyirwan Ismail, also known as Ring Road II, in the Lok Bahu area of Sungai Kunjang, Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The two victims were identified as Siti Nuripah, 51, and her daughter, Vika Purnama Wulandari, 25. Both died at the scene.
Video of the crash shows the motorcycle traveling ahead of the container truck before the impact. The motorcycle moves into the truck’s path and then slows or brakes. The front of the truck strikes the motorcycle, and the motorcycle goes under the vehicle. The footage supports the central sequence described in local reports: the motorcycle was ahead of the truck, the distance between the vehicles closed, and the impact forced the victims under the container truck.
Police later described the early finding as a rear-end crash, with the truck positioned behind the motorcycle before the collision. Investigators had not publicly finalized the cause in the latest accessible reports. The available police statements said officers were still collecting witness testimony and evidence from the scene.
The truck driver, identified in local reports as a 24-year-old man, was taken into police custody for questioning after the crash. As of the later police update published several days after the collision, his status was still listed as a witness. Police said they still needed additional witnesses from the crash site before determining the next legal step.
The truck driver said after the crash that he had sounded the horn before the collision. He said the motorcycle had passed another vehicle and then suddenly slowed in front of him. He also said his room to maneuver was limited because of vehicles parked near an intersection. Those details come from the driver’s account and were still subject to police verification.
The crash scene was on a road used by heavy vehicles, including container trucks and freight traffic. Transportation officials in Samarinda later said the Ring Road corridor is part of a designated route for container and goods vehicles under local freight-route rules. Officials also said heavy vehicles were not barred from using the route at that time, because the road is tied to logistics movement in and around Samarinda.
The deaths renewed attention on large-truck crashes in the city. Police later said heavy vehicles are involved in fewer crashes than motorcycles overall, but the consequences are often more severe when a large truck collides with a smaller vehicle. Police also said they were increasing attention on heavy vehicles, including enforcement connected to overloaded or oversized trucks.
The victims were later buried in Lempake. Siti Nuripah was described as the head of PAUD Bunga Tanjung, an early childhood education institution, while Vika Purnama Wulandari was described as working as a physiotherapist. Reports said both lived in the Lempake area.
Police said the investigation was focused on reconstructing the exact sequence before impact, checking witness statements and reviewing evidence from the scene. No accessible official statement showed that a suspect had been formally named at the time of the latest available update.
