A man identified as Kawsar Alam was hacked and beheaded in Gafargaon, in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, after leaving his home on the evening of May 20, 2026. His body was discovered the following morning in a wooded area of Darichairbaria village under Pagla Police Station, with his hands tied and his severed head lying nearby. Police later opened a murder case, transferred the investigation to the district Detective Branch, and subsequent reporting said two men were arrested in connection with the killing.
The video published with this article directly records the violent attack. The footage captures the assault itself, and a sharp weapon can be seen during the violence. The recording establishes the attack as a real event, but it does not, by itself, establish the identities of the attackers, the events leading up to the violence, or the motive later described in the investigation.
Local residents found the body on the morning of May 21 and contacted police. The torso was found with both hands tied to a tree, while the head was on the ground nearby. Because the victim could not initially be identified locally, the Police Bureau of Investigation was called. Investigators used fingerprints to identify him as Kawsar Alam, a man originally from Birampur in Dinajpur district who had been living in the Sripur area of Gazipur.
Published accounts differed on Alam’s age, listing him as 40, 44 or 45. They also differed on the exact time he left home. His wife, Nazma Begum, was quoted in an early follow-up as saying he ate dinner and left around 8 p.m., telling her that someone was waiting for him outside. A later account citing the Detective Branch placed his departure at about 00:6:30 p.m. and said he had left while looking for a new job. The accounts agree that his phone was subsequently switched off and his family lost contact with him.
An early follow-up said Alam lived with his family near MC Bazar in Sripur and worked at a garment factory. The same report said he had previously been involved in a yarn business before taking a job after business losses. It also reported that he had married Nazma about a year and a half before the killing and that the couple had a two-month-old son.
Police sent the body to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination. On May 22, Nazma Begum filed a murder case at Pagla Police Station against unidentified people. At that stage, investigators described the killing as apparently premeditated and said they were examining personal hostility and a possible extramarital relationship as potential lines of inquiry. Those possibilities were investigative theories at the time, not established facts.
The case developed further on May 26, when subsequent reporting citing Mymensingh District Detective Branch said police arrested Riton Mia in the Mashakhali Tanpara area. According to those reports, Riton was sent to court and gave a confessional statement admitting involvement in the killing. The account attributed to his court statement said Alam had been taken to a secluded location as part of a preplanned attack, hacked with a sharp weapon and had his throat cut. The body was then tied to a mango tree before the attackers fled.
Investigators later transferred the case to the district Detective Branch. On June 1, police arrested another man, Faruk, in the Chairman Bazar area of Ishwarganj. Subsequent reporting citing the Detective Branch identified Faruk as the principal organizer in the case and said he also gave a confessional statement before a court.
The motive described in that later account was based on Faruk’s suspicion, not on independent proof that an affair actually occurred. According to reporting that cited his statement, Faruk believed Alam was involved in an extramarital relationship with the elder sister of Faruk’s wife. The reported confession said that belief and the anger surrounding it led to the planned killing. The existence of the alleged relationship was not independently established in the material located for this report.
The sequence reported after the arrests also clarified an important point about the crime scene. The initial discovery showed Alam’s body tied to a tree, which could suggest he had been restrained there during the killing. The later account attributed to Riton’s confession instead said Alam was attacked at a secluded location and that the body was tied to the tree afterward. The available reporting therefore supports the fact that the body was found tied to the tree, while the exact sequence before and during the killing comes from the reported confession.
As of the June 2 and June 3 follow-up reports located for this article, police said they were still seeking other people believed to have been involved. No later reliable case-specific update establishing additional arrests, a charge sheet, trial outcome or final judicial ruling was located during this review.
