A man was killed and his 9-year-old daughter was critically injured after the motor scooter they were riding fell beneath a reversing road roller during street construction in Bathinda, Punjab, India, on May 8, 2026. CCTV footage records the scooter losing balance beside the work area, both riders falling onto the road and the heavy machine continuing backward over them.
Local press reports identified the father as Vishal Gupta and the child as Mannat. The reports said Gupta suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene. Mannat was trapped beneath the road roller and sustained critical injuries.
The footage was recorded in Street No. 9 of Ganesha Basti, a residential area where a road was being resurfaced. The road roller is seen reversing along the narrow lane as the scooter approaches near the edge of the newly worked surface.

Gupta’s body was taken to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. Reports published on the day of the accident said he died immediately after sustaining major head trauma. The video confirms that the road roller passed over him, but the precise medical cause of death depends on the hospital and postmortem findings.
Follow-up reporting introduced allegations that were not established by the CCTV footage. Family members and residents claimed the operator was wearing headphones, looking at a mobile phone and reversing carelessly.
One resident alleged that a minor was operating the road roller. A relative also claimed the operator did not have a license and that the machine lacked required documents. Those statements were allegations made by relatives and witnesses, not findings confirmed in a publicly available police report.
Relatives said the operator fled after the accident and demanded action against those responsible for the road project. Gupta’s sister said her brother was not responsible for the crash and that the family wanted justice for him and his injured daughter.
Another relative said the family would not proceed with Gupta’s cremation until authorities addressed its demands.
A local council member requested government financial assistance for the family and free medical treatment for Mannat. He also called for stronger safety measures wherever road construction machinery is operating.
Residents specifically complained that the lane had not been closed, traffic had not been stopped and safety ropes had not been installed while the road roller was working. The published footage confirms that the scooter was able to travel beside the active paving operation, but it does not establish who was legally responsible for controlling access to the lane.
Reports continued to describe Mannat as critically injured through May 13. No reliable later medical update confirming her recovery, continued hospitalization or death was found.
