Drive-by shooting kills 22-year-old and wounds another man in Antofagasta, Chile.
NEWS:
A 22-year-old man was killed and another man was seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Huanchaca Street and Carlos Oviedo Cavada Avenue in Antofagasta, Chile, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Video from the scene records the attack as a vehicle passes the victims and multiple gunshots are fired. The shooting itself is visible in the footage, establishing that the two men were attacked from a moving vehicle. The recording does not establish who was inside the vehicle, why the men were targeted or what occurred before the captured sequence.
The shooting took place in Población Matta, in the central-northern area of Antofagasta. According to reporting published the following day, the 22-year-old victim and a companion had left a nearby residence and were walking through the area when the vehicle approached and its occupants opened fire.
The younger man suffered fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene. The second victim survived the initial attack but was seriously injured. He was stabilized and transported to Antofagasta Regional Hospital, where his condition was described as serious and subject to a reserved medical diagnosis in the initial follow-up coverage.
Police secured the intersection after the shooting and restricted access to preserve evidence. Specialists from Carabineros’ Criminalistics Laboratory, known as Labocar, were assigned to examine the crime scene.
The forensic work included documenting the area and examining ballistic evidence that could help determine the number and direction of the shots. Investigators were also reported to be reviewing surveillance cameras from the neighborhood in an effort to trace the vehicle used in the attack.
The video directly confirms the gunfire and the use of a passing vehicle. Other elements remained investigative matters rather than facts established by the footage. The recording does not prove the attackers’ identities, the motive, whether the victims knew the occupants or whether the shooting was connected to a previous dispute or criminal organization.
No arrests had been reported in the immediate follow-up published on May 7. Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect, announced a motive or released a detailed reconstruction of the events in the available case-specific coverage. No subsequent medical update on the surviving victim was included beyond the initial report that he remained seriously injured.
The killing prompted a public response from Antofagasta lawmaker Fabián Ossandón on May 8. He cited the Población Matta shooting and another recent firearm homicide in the regional capital while demanding stronger government action against violent crime.
His statement addressed public security policy and did not provide additional investigative findings about the Huanchaca Street attack. No official case-specific announcement confirming arrests, charges or a motive was located in the public material reviewed for this report.
