Two utility workers suffered burn injuries when an electrical explosion and fire erupted during maintenance work at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad substation in Melaka, Malaysia, on July 21, 2025.
The incident occurred at about 00:10:30 a.m. at an electrical substation near Pangsapuri Rumpun Bahagia on Jalan Bachang. Both workers were men in their 30s and were carrying out maintenance when the electrical incident occurred.
Footage published with the incident records the sudden electrical blast. A bright flash and flames erupt around the work area within moments, directly capturing the violent nature of the electrical event.
Both workers survived the initial explosion and sustained burns. They were removed from the scene and transported to a hospital for treatment before firefighters arrived.
The Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 00:10:38 a.m. Nine firefighters were deployed to the scene, with emergency vehicles including an Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit.
Fire crews arrived about five minutes after receiving the call. By that time, the injured workers had already been taken to the hospital and the fire associated with the explosion had been extinguished.
Firefighters inspected the electrical installation and surrounding area for additional hazards. The incident was declared under control at approximately 00:10:47 a.m., and the emergency operation ended around 00:10:52 a.m. after crews determined there was no remaining immediate danger at the site.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad later identified the electrical event as an arc flash that occurred while its employees were carrying out maintenance work on Jalan Bachang.
An arc flash is an electrical discharge through the air that can produce an intense burst of light, heat and flame. In this incident, the accompanying footage directly records the flash and fire, while the workers' burn injuries were confirmed after the accident.
TNB said both employees remained hospitalized and were being closely monitored by medical personnel after the incident.
The company established an internal investigation team to determine what caused the arc flash and said it would cooperate with the relevant authorities. No final technical cause was publicly announced in the subsequent material available about the accident.
