Drunk driver who killed security guard in Trujillo sentenced to prison, Peru.

NEWS:

A woman who drove drunk and rammed a security guard into a wall in Trujillo, Peru, was sentenced to prison after the victim died from the injuries caused by the crash.

The fatal incident happened on May 3, 2026, in the Palmas del Golf area of Víctor Larco, in Trujillo. The victim, identified in court-related reporting as Juan Martínez Torres, was working as a security guard outside a property near Los Tallanes and Las Capullanas streets when he was hit by a vehicle with license plate CTB-527.

Security camera footage shows the vehicle moving toward the sidewalk and slamming the guard against the front wall of a building. The impact leaves him on the pavement near the wall. The video directly records the vehicle striking him and the immediate aftermath at the residential street.

The driver was identified as Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna. Authorities and prosecutors later established that she was driving under the influence. The alcohol test registered 1.84 grams of alcohol per liter of blood, far above the legal limit. The case file also recorded that her driver’s license had been expired since 2022.

Martínez was taken to Hospital Belén in Trujillo after the crash. He remained hospitalized for five days with severe injuries. Medical information cited during the case described chest trauma, multiple fractures, a fractured pelvis and a fractured femur. He died on May 8, 2026.

After his death, prosecutors moved to change the legal classification of the case from negligent injuries to negligent homicide. The fiscal request sought 5 years and 4 months in prison, permanent disqualification from driving and civil compensation of S/ 329,280 for the victim’s heirs.

The case drew additional scrutiny because the first police record was reported to have described the incident as a fall from height, despite witnesses and camera footage pointing to a vehicle impact. Later reporting said two police officers connected to that initial record were separated from their posts and placed under internal investigation over the handling of the case.

A court in La Libertad later convicted Alfaro Cerna of negligent homicide. The sentence imposed was 4 years, 6 months and 26 days of effective prison time. The court also fixed civil compensation at S/ 329,280 for the victim’s family.

The sentence was issued after Alfaro Cerna accepted responsibility under an expedited judicial mechanism. The court rejected a suspended sentence and ordered effective imprisonment. She was later admitted to the El Milagro women’s prison in Trujillo to serve the sentence.

The court also imposed a permanent driving disqualification. That measure prevents Alfaro Cerna from obtaining authorization to drive again as part of the penalties tied to the fatal crash.

The verified record now goes beyond the initial video of a security guard being hit by a car. The victim died days later, prosecutors reclassified the case, and the driver was convicted and sent to prison for negligent homicide.
