Mother and son killed in machete attack in Ulianópolis, Brazil.

NEWS:

A mother and her son were killed in a machete attack at Colônia Neuton Miranda, a rural community in Ulianópolis, in southeastern Pará state, Brazil, on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Police identified the victims as Dorizete Sousa and Iran Sousa Oliveira.

The man arrested in connection with the killings was identified as Edimilson Santos da Silva, Dorizete’s partner and Iran’s stepfather. Civil Police registered Dorizete’s death as femicide and Iran’s as aggravated homicide.

Video footage that will accompany this report records the violent attack itself. The images show the assault taking place and the bladed weapon being used against the victims. The footage establishes that the attack occurred, but it does not independently establish the events that preceded the violence, the motive or every element required for a final criminal judgment.

According to investigators, the violence followed a disagreement between Edimilson and his stepson. Police said Dorizete intervened in an attempt to protect Iran and was also attacked. Authorities reported finding no evidence at the scene supporting a claim of self-defense.

Police said both victims were struck with a machete. The official account does not specify the number or location of their wounds. Their bodies were transferred to the Scientific Police unit in Paragominas for forensic examinations.

Civil Police officers from Ulianópolis began searching for Edimilson after receiving information about the killings. Military Police officers assisted in the operation. Investigators learned that he was at his brother’s home and went to the address.

Police said Edimilson was inside the residence when officers arrived. He was questioned, admitted committing the crimes and was taken into custody, according to the official police account. Officers transported him to the police station for the procedures required following an immediate arrest.

The detention was registered as an in-flagrante arrest. Authorities said Edimilson remained in custody pending court action after being processed at the station.

A report published after the initial coverage confirmed that the suspect remained detained and that Civil and Military Police had participated in the arrest. No publicly verifiable later update was located confirming whether a judge converted the detention into preventive custody, whether prosecutors filed a formal criminal complaint or whether a trial date was set.

The recorded attack, the two deaths and the arrest are established elements of the case. The police account attributes the machete to the suspect and states that he confessed after officers located him. The reported disagreement, Dorizete’s attempt to protect her son and the assessment that the scene did not indicate self-defense are findings attributed to investigators, not independent conclusions drawn from the video alone.

Edimilson has not been tried or convicted. A final determination of criminal responsibility, motive and the charges to be adjudicated will depend on the evidence presented in court.
