NEWS:

Three people were killed and one person was seriously injured after a Toyota SW4 and a truck collided head-on on BR-101 near Teixeira de Freitas, Brazil, on Thursday afternoon, April 16.

The crash happened on the stretch of the highway between Teixeira de Freitas and Itamaraju, in the far south of Bahia. Initial information from the scene listed one fatality, but later reports citing highway police updated the toll to three deaths and one seriously injured survivor.

According to information attributed to Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, the crash happened around 00:3:40 p.m. at kilometer 871 of BR-101. The collision involved a Mercedes-Benz truck pulling a semitrailer and a Toyota SW4.

The footage and images from the scene show the wrecked SUV and the truck after the collision, with the vehicles stopped on the highway and emergency response activity around the crash site. The damage visible in the images is consistent with a violent head-on impact. The first scene report said the force of the crash left one victim without clothing after the collision.

Four people were inside the Toyota SW4. Three died at the scene. A fourth occupant was rescued in serious condition and taken to Hospital Costa das Baleias in Teixeira de Freitas. No confirmed updated medical condition for the survivor was found in the material reviewed.

The truck driver was reported to have escaped without injuries.

The people who died were later identified in public reports as Mara Cristina Vigneron de Araújo Oliveira, 61, Patrícia Vigneron Araújo, 56, and Romulo Alves de Oliveira, 61. Later accounts said Mara and Patrícia were sisters, and that Rômulo was Patrícia’s husband.

The occupants of the SUV were described as two couples. Reports said the group included residents connected to Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro, and Marataízes, in Espírito Santo.

The initial report did not confirm the identity of the person who died first at the scene. Later updates identified all three fatal victims, but one report still noted that the third formal identification had not been confirmed at the time of its publication. A later public obituary identified Rômulo Alves de Oliveira as one of the victims.

Emergency teams and public safety agents were called to the highway after the crash. The area was isolated for rescue work, forensic examination and removal of the bodies. Traffic was slow during the response.

The occurrence was registered at the 1st Territorial Police Station in Teixeira de Freitas. Police issued documents for forensic work and body removal. The cause of the head-on collision was still being examined based on the public information available.
