A construction worker was buried alive and killed when a roadside trench collapsed during water pipeline repair work in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The worker was identified as Mahendra Singh. He was inside a deep excavation on Railway Road, near the Apsara Cinema, when a large section of soil and material along the edge of the trench suddenly gave way.
CCTV footage recorded by a nearby business shows Mahendra working inside the excavation moments before the collapse. A mass of soil breaks away from one side and drops directly into the trench, covering him within seconds.
Other workers immediately run toward the excavation and begin removing the soil. The footage shows several people digging at the collapsed area as they attempt to reach him. The video directly documents the collapse and the worker being buried, but it does not establish what caused the ground to fail or whether required excavation protections had been installed.
Workers and heavy equipment were used to remove Mahendra from the debris. He was transported to Malkhan Singh District Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Two other workers were injured in the accident. Local reports identified them as Rajkumar, a resident of the Barola Bypass area, and Pramod, from Chaumuhan in Atrauli. No detailed public medical update describing their injuries was located.
The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. in one of Aligarh’s main commercial areas. Road, sewer and drainage construction was underway on Railway Road as part of the municipal CM Grid project.
During the sewer work, an underground drinking water pipeline had been damaged. Crews had reportedly spent about a week repairing the resulting leaks. Two sections had already been repaired, and Mahendra’s team was working on another connection when the edge of the excavation collapsed.

According to Meena, the collapse occurred unexpectedly while the pipeline connection was being completed. He said Mahendra suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The municipal commissioner ordered a three-member inquiry headed by the additional municipal commissioner. The panel was instructed to investigate the circumstances of the trench collapse and deliver its report within three days.
Meena said anyone found responsible would face action. A later report continued to raise questions about excavation safety, supervision and whether the work had been adequately surveyed before workers entered the trench.
The Uttar Pradesh government announced financial assistance of 500,000 rupees for Mahendra’s family. Municipal information described the payment as assistance available through an accident compensation program. District officials also said the private contractor had offered separate compensation, although the amount was not publicly specified.
The government assistance was announced after the accident, but subsequent posts indicated that members of the family were dissatisfied with the proposed compensation.
