Gunmen kill man and wound several people at food stand in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
NEWS:
A group of gunmen opened fire at a food stand in central Guayaquil, Ecuador, killing one man and wounding several other people in an attack captured on video.
The shooting happened on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the intersection of Venezuela and 6 de Marzo streets. Reports placed the attack between about 00:6:39 p.m. and 00:6:50 p.m. The difference in time appears in separate accounts of the same case and has not been resolved in the public material reviewed.
The video records the armed attack at the food business. It shows the shooting unfolding suddenly as people are at the location. Reports said several attackers arrived in a white pickup truck, got out and fired repeatedly at people gathered at the food stand. The gunmen then fled.
One man later died from the attack. He was identified in later reporting as Juan Carlos Guerrero Spooner, 56. Reports said he had a criminal record for receiving stolen property in January 2026. That background does not establish the motive for the shooting or prove why he was targeted.
Authorities collected ballistic evidence at the scene. Later reporting said at least 15 shell casings from 9mm rounds and two from 5.56 caliber rounds were recovered. That evidence supports the account that more than one type of firearm may have been used in the attack.
Several people were wounded. Later reporting identified the injured as Danny Mosquera, 56, Henry Fandiño, 44, Byron Valarezo and Yira Gómez, 64. The same reporting said Mosquera had records for robbery and injuries in a traffic accident, Fandiño had a record for illicit trafficking of controlled substances, and Valarezo had a record for robbery. Gómez was described as having no criminal record and as a collateral victim.
There is one relevant discrepancy in the public reports. An earlier account identified one of the injured as Franklin Castro, while the later update listed Henry Fandiño among the wounded. Because of that conflict, the identities of all injured people should be treated as reported information, not as independently verified official data.
One account said the owner of the business told police he was outside the establishment when he heard a vehicle brake sharply, followed by repeated gunfire. He reported being hit in the thigh and ankle, taking cover and later going to a medical facility by his own means.
Another wounded person reportedly said he was eating when the shooting began and was struck in the abdomen. He was also taken to a clinic for medical treatment.
Initial reports said five people were affected, one of whom later died. Later reports described one deceased victim and several wounded. The confirmed core of the case is that the shooting left one man dead and multiple people injured at the food business.
No suspect had been publicly identified in the accessible reports reviewed. Police were reported to be carrying out operations in the area to identify and capture those responsible.
The attack occurred in the 9 de Octubre police district, which includes that part of central Guayaquil. Later reporting said the district had recorded 61 violent deaths so far in 2026. It also said Zone 8, which includes Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón, had recorded 887 violent deaths in the same period. Those figures were reported as context for the local security situation and do not establish the motive in this specific shooting.
The strongest established elements are the location, the public video of the armed attack, the death of Juan Carlos Guerrero Spooner, multiple wounded victims, the reported use of a white pickup truck, and the recovery of ballistic evidence from 9mm and 5.56 caliber weapons. The motive, the identity of the shooters and the intended target had not been confirmed in the public material reviewed.
