A 49-year-old pickup driver was killed after a Ford Mustang traveling at excessive speed struck his truck at an intersection in Las Vegas, Nevada, early on May 23, 2026.

The crash happened at approximately 00:5:36 a.m. at East Washington Avenue and North Bruce Street.

The man killed in the collision was later identified as Juan Jose Santana-Savalza, 49.

Surveillance footage and evidence collected at the scene documented the collision. Santana-Savalza was driving a 1993 Nissan truck westbound on Washington Avenue and approached Bruce Street in the designated left-turn lane.

Police said the Nissan entered the intersection on a fresh yellow traffic signal and began turning left toward southbound Bruce Street.

A 2015 Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound on Washington Avenue in the left travel lane.

Investigators said the Mustang was approaching the intersection at excessive speed. According to police, its driver failed to reduce speed or exercise due care and entered the intersection at a high rate of speed as the traffic signal changed to red.

The front of the Mustang struck the right side of the Nissan.

The impact redirected both vehicles toward the west and ejected Santana-Savalza from his truck.

Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Santana-Savalza was pronounced dead.

The Mustang driver and a female passenger were both seriously injured and taken to University Medical Center Trauma Center.

The driver was admitted with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was initially reported to be in critical condition.

Police initially identified the Mustang driver as Maria Gonzalez-Medina, 21. Later court reporting identified her as Maria Gonsalez.

Investigators said she displayed signs of impairment after the crash. Because she remained hospitalized with serious injuries, she was initially arrested and booked in absentia on charges related to driving under the influence and reckless driving.

The physical collision is documented by surveillance footage. The video establishes the movement of the vehicles, the impact and the violent aftermath of the crash. Whether the Mustang driver was legally impaired is a separate matter dependent on police evidence and the criminal proceedings.

A bottle of Don Julio tequila was reported to have been in plain view on the passenger-side floorboard of the Mustang.

Those observations formed part of the evidence cited in the suspected DUI investigation. Gonsalez has not been convicted based on those allegations and later entered a not-guilty plea.

The same arrest report said the Mustang's registration had been suspended in January 2025, leaving the vehicle unregistered at the time of the May crash.

It also listed a previous vehicular manslaughter charge involving Gonsalez in connection with an incident in 2023.

The available information establishes the existence of that prior charge but does not establish that it resulted in a conviction. It therefore should not be treated as proof of prior criminal guilt.

Gonsalez appeared remotely in Las Vegas Justice Court on June 10 while she was still hospitalized. The court was informed that a request had been filed the previous day for the case to be presented to a grand jury.

Later court proceedings documented that Gonsalez pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

She has faced charges that include DUI resulting in death and reckless driving in connection with the fatal collision.

A trial date of September 8 was subsequently reported. No publicly verified verdict or final disposition was available as of September 11.

Santana-Savalza was a construction worker and father of three, according to people who knew him.

Friends said he was on his way to work when the crash occurred.

A fundraiser was held for his family after his death, drawing friends, relatives and members of the local community.

A longtime coworker described Santana-Savalza as a dedicated worker and responsible father who had worked in construction for more than a decade.

His death was recorded as the 48th traffic-related fatality within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction in 2026 at the time of the crash.

Police officials cited speed, suspected impairment and failure to yield right of way as contributing factors identified during their initial investigation of the collision.
