Male fetus found with head separated near abandoned office in Kobi, Indonesia.
NEWS:
A male fetus estimated at seven to eight months was found in bushes near an abandoned agriculture office in Kobi, Central Maluku, Indonesia, on Friday afternoon, April 17, 2026, in a case police are treating as a suspected abortion.
The fetus and placenta were found in Desa Kobi, in the Seram Utara Timur Kobi district of Central Maluku. Local reporting said residents notified the Kobi police sub-sector after the discovery, and officers later went to the scene with residents who had reported the case.
The visual material from the scene confirms the discovery and the condition of the remains as visible after the incident. It does not show who left the fetus there, what happened before the discovery, or whether the pregnancy ended through an abortion, a medical emergency or another sequence of events.
Police conducted a crime scene examination at about 7 p.m. WIT on the same day. A Central Maluku Police spokesperson said the conditions were dark when officers processed the location, forcing them to use cellphone light during the examination.
By the time officers processed the scene, the fetus was no longer in its original position. Police reported finding a long skirt and white underwear with blood stains near the scene. Blood was also found inside a bathroom area of the abandoned office.
Investigators said the placenta was found in bushes behind the building. The fetus was described as male and wrapped in banana leaves. Police also reported that the head was separated from the body, with the two parts found about half a meter apart.
Medical staff at Puskesmas Morokay examined the remains. Based on the preliminary medical information reported by police, the fetus was male and estimated to be about seven to eight months old.
Local reporting said the initial discovery was made by women who were in the area and later informed other residents. The report said residents did not handle the remains directly and instead brought the information to police at about 00:5:15 p.m. WIT.
The case is being investigated as a suspected illegal abortion, according to the police account reported from the scene. That suspicion is based on the condition of the fetus, the placenta and the blood-stained clothing found near the abandoned building.
No person responsible for leaving the fetus at the site had been publicly identified in the available local reporting. No arrest was reported in the later material located after the initial report.
