Gunman kills man during pool game at bar in Mangaratiba, Brazil.

NEWS:

A man was killed in a fatal shooting while playing pool inside a bar in Vila Muriqui, a district of Mangaratiba, in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil.

The victim was identified as Agnaldo Junior Ateniense Mendes, 36. The shooting happened on the night of Tuesday, April 14, inside a bar on Rua Dulce, in the Costa Verde region.

Surveillance video from the bar shows a helmeted gunman entering the business while Mendes is near a pool table. The shooter moves toward him and fires at close range. People inside the bar immediately run from the area as the shots are fired.

The video directly shows the attack happening during the pool game. It shows the gunman wearing a helmet and approaching the victim before opening fire. It also shows other customers fleeing after the shooting begins.

Mendes was hit by several gunshots. Initial reporting said he was struck multiple times, including in the face, and died at the scene. Police officers from the 33rd Military Police Battalion, based in Angra dos Reis, were called to the address and found the victim without signs of life, according to information attributed to police.

There is a relevant discrepancy in later published accounts about what happened after the shooting. Some reports said Mendes died inside the bar before emergency help arrived. Another later account said firefighters were called, took him alive to Hospital Municipal Victor de Souza Breves, in central Mangaratiba, and that he died after being taken there. Because the available public information is not uniform, the exact moment and place where death was formally declared should be treated with caution unless confirmed by an official record.

The gunman fled after the shooting. Later reporting described the attacker as having arrived on a motorcycle with another man. According to that account, the passenger got off the motorcycle, entered the bar area, fired several times at Mendes and then left with the driver. That detail appears in later local coverage and should be treated as information reported by the press, not as an independently published official statement.

The Civil Police registered the case at the 165th Police Precinct in Mangaratiba. Information attributed to investigators said a forensic examination was carried out at the crime scene and that officers were working to identify the shooter and determine the motive.

No suspect had been publicly identified in the reports reviewed. Later coverage said no one had been arrested at the time of publication.

The motive for the killing had not been confirmed. Witnesses quoted in later reporting claimed the shooter appeared to know who he was targeting, but that remains a witness account and not a confirmed finding. The same reporting said Mendes had been living in the district for about a month and was not widely known in the neighborhood. That information also depends on witness statements and should not be treated as a verified police conclusion.

The footage is central to the case because it captures the moment of the bar shooting. It does not show what happened before the gunman entered the business, and it does not establish motive, planning, prior threats or any relationship between the shooter and the victim.

Police were reported to be reviewing surveillance footage and collecting information that could help trace the motorcycle and identify the people involved. The public reports reviewed did not include an official name for the shooter, a confirmed motive, a recovered weapon or a court filing related to the case.

The case remains a homicide investigation handled by the 165th Police Precinct in Mangaratiba.
