Americanization of Brazil: The right-wing agenda has been working well. Another case of a teenager taking a firearm from their legal guardian to kill classmates.

This time, in Acre, a 13-year-old brought a pistol to school and tried to shoot classmates. Two staff members gave their lives to save the other children. Raquel Sales Feitosa, 36, and Alzenir Pereira, 53, died at the scene. The teenager was taken into custody.

This week I saw a video of a teacher venting about how difficult it has been to teach young people who don’t respect women, talk about raping classmates, and threaten to bring a family member’s gun to school to kill someone. The violence is predominantly directed at women—of all ages.

I wish this were just an ideological delusion on my part, but it isn’t. The influences at home, the ideas passed on by neo-Pentecostal parents with a patriarchal culture, the reinforcement of these ideals in Discord groups—it’s real. I don’t know how we Brazilians are going to curb the rise of this culture, often linked to racial, gender, or religious supremacy. Living with this every day is difficult.
