Military police officer shoots two women dead during street dispute in Cariacica, Brazil.
NEWS:
A Brazilian military police officer was arrested after shooting two women dead during a street dispute in Cariacica, Espírito Santo, Brazil, after he was called to a neighborhood argument involving his ex-wife.
The shooting happened on the morning of April 8, 2026, in Cruzeiro do Sul, a neighborhood in Cariacica, part of the Greater Vitória region. The victims were identified as Daniele Toneto and Francisca Chaguiana Dias Viana. They were a couple and lived in the same building as the officer’s ex-wife, on different floors.
The officer was identified as Corporal Luiz Gustavo Xavier do Vale. He was on duty at the time of the shooting, wearing his uniform and carrying a gun. He was not assigned to regular street patrol at the time because he had been moved to internal duties after a previous case involving the death of a transgender woman in 2022.
Video from the scene shows the officer arriving with other military police officers and moving toward the women. The footage shows him armed and firing at them in the street. One woman tries to run after the first shots, but she is also hit. Other officers can be seen nearby during the attack.
Both women died after the shooting. The officer was taken to a police station by colleagues, and his gun was seized. Later information said he was arrested in the case and held in a military facility while the killings were investigated by the Civil Police and military authorities.
The dispute began before the shooting, according to accounts gathered after the crime. Residents said the conflict involved the officer’s ex-wife and the two victims. Early accounts said the argument was linked to an air conditioner and accusations over electricity use inside the building.
The officer’s ex-wife and the victims lived in the same building, but on different floors. Witness accounts said the women had argued earlier that day. One version said the argument escalated after comments involving the child the ex-wife has with the officer. The ex-wife later told reporters that she went downstairs carrying a knife and said she had been attacked by the women during the confrontation. That account is attributed to her and was not treated as a final police conclusion in the public material reviewed.
Police information cited after the shooting said the officer received a call from his ex-wife while he was on duty at the 1st Company of the 7th Battalion. A command center had already been contacted for a response to the dispute. The officer then requested authorization by radio to leave the company and go to the scene.
A later account from the Military Police commander said there was no clear formal authorization from a superior for the corporal to leave his post and take part in the response. The commander also said a police officer can go to a family-related incident only to give guidance or support, not to lead the response.
The case drew more scrutiny after additional security footage showed the conduct of the other officers who were present. The images showed officers near the scene while the corporal approached and shot the women. The footage did not show them stopping him before the shots.
The Military Police commander said the officers had a duty to intervene and that the response shown in the footage failed to meet expected police conduct. The state governor later announced that all military police officers involved in the scene would be suspended from all duties, including administrative work, and that their weapons would be collected.
A later court development added another concrete step to the case. Six military police officers who were with the corporal at the scene were suspended after a request from state prosecutors. The officers were identified in reports as Edson Luiz da Silva Verona, Eduardo Ferro Coradini, Filipe Gonçalves Vieira, Hilario Antonio Nunes Loureiro Junior, Lucas Nogueira Oliveira and Valfril do Carmo Carreiro.
The prosecutor’s request also called for suspension of functional gun carry, seizure of institutional weapons and suspension of private firearm carry for the officers under investigation. The request also sought the return of the case files to the Military Police internal affairs unit for additional steps, including forensic reports, witness statements and a final report.
The corporal remained imprisoned after the shooting. Publicly available information said he would face proceedings in both the civilian and military systems. No final judgment was located in the public material reviewed.
The confirmed record shows that Daniele Toneto and Francisca Chaguiana Dias Viana were shot dead in Cariacica, the shooter was identified as a military police corporal who was on duty, video captured the attack, the officer was arrested, and six other officers present at the scene were later suspended while their conduct was investigated.
