Venezuelan motorcyclist killed by chain barrier in Cuiabá, Brazil.

NEWS:

A 22-year-old Venezuelan motorcyclist died after hitting a chain-and-cone barrier on a closed road in Cuiabá, Brazil, in a fatal crash recorded by security cameras.

The victim was identified as José Antônio Sabino Herrera. The crash happened on Saturday, March 28, 2026, on Avenida Desembargador Carlos Avalone, in the Centro Político Administrativo area of Cuiabá, near the Palácio Paiaguás, the seat of Mato Grosso’s state government.

The road was blocked with orange barriers, traffic cones and a chain stretched across most of the lane. The video shows the motorcyclist riding toward the roadblock before striking the barrier. The impact throws him off the motorcycle and onto the pavement. His motorcycle continues moving for a short distance before coming to a stop farther ahead.

Authorities who responded to the scene confirmed his death at the location. The area had already been isolated by police when investigators and forensic teams arrived.

According to information attributed to the police report, Herrera was traveling along the avenue when he did not perceive the blocked stretch of road in time. The barrier consisted of cones and chains placed across the road. After hitting the obstruction, he lost control of the motorcycle and fell.

The footage published after the crash gives a clearer view of the roadblock. The images show the lane partially closed by orange safety barriers, cones and a chain crossing the roadway, with a narrow opening on the left side. Herrera appears in the distance and continues toward the obstruction. The video does not show a clear stop before the collision.

The impact is violent. The rider is launched from the motorcycle, his helmet comes loose and rolls on the road, and he lands motionless on the asphalt. The motorcycle keeps moving briefly without him before falling or stopping ahead. The barrier pieces are left scattered after the crash.

Police and forensic teams were called to examine the scene and collect evidence. The Perícia Oficial e Identificação Técnica, known as Politec, was involved in the initial examination. The Delegacia Especializada de Delitos de Trânsito, the specialized traffic crimes division, also began investigating the circumstances of the fatal crash.

One point under review was the visibility and placement of the roadblock. Reports said the road in that area is commonly closed at night and on weekends. Later coverage said the video showed Herrera trying to pass through a street that is often blocked with cones and a chain.

The case also produced conflicting early accounts. One version circulated shortly after the crash described the death as an alleged hit-and-run or atropelamento involving an intoxicated driver. Police later clarified, according to local reporting, that the crash was not an atropelamento. The later account said the initial investigation pointed to the fall being caused by the motorcycle striking the roadblock.

Because of that clarification, the strongest supported version is that Herrera died after colliding with the chain-and-cone barrier, not after being hit by another vehicle.

The victim’s body was taken to the Instituto Médico Legal for examination. Later reporting also stated that emergency medical responders were called, but could only confirm his death at the scene.

A later report said a check found that Herrera did not have a Brazilian driver’s license. That detail was not present in all early accounts, so it should be treated as information reported after the initial coverage, not as a visible fact from the video.

The fatal crash drew attention to the use of chains as road barriers, especially where motorcycles may approach at night or in limited visibility. The footage shows a physical obstruction across the road, but it does not by itself prove who installed it, whether it followed safety rules or whether any public employee or agency acted negligently.

Mato Grosso Gov. Otaviano Pivetta later said the state had taken measures after Herrera’s death. He described the crash as tragic and said the chain would be removed to prevent similar situations.

The investigation was left to traffic authorities to determine whether the road closure was properly marked, whether the chain was visible enough for approaching riders and whether the setup of the barrier contributed to the fatal crash.
