A 37-year-old television journalist was stabbed with a broken bottle outside his home in Muthupettai, in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur district, India, on the night of May 18, 2026. Police placed the attack at about 00:11:30 p.m., while another account put it closer to 00:11:45 p.m. CCTV footage recorded the assault at close range, showing the journalist stepping outside, being struck repeatedly and trying to defend himself as family members rushed from the house to intervene.

The journalist, identified as Haja Maideen, worked for a private Tamil television channel. Initial reports said three men approached his home after he had returned from work and that one of them asked for his help in filing a complaint at a local police station. In that account, the man said he had been attacked by someone from Kovilur and claimed police had refused to take his complaint, prompting him to ask Maideen to intervene.

According to that version, Maideen came outside to hear more about the request and was looking at his phone when one of the men produced a bottle that had been concealed on his body and attacked him. Police later gave a different account of why the men went to the house. Tiruvarur district police said their inquiry indicated that the visit stemmed from a personal dispute and that the men had gone there to confront Maideen.

The CCTV footage establishes the attack itself, but it does not establish what was said before the violence or prove either side's explanation for why the encounter began. The video shows the attacker repeatedly assaulting Maideen near the entrance to the home. Two women, identified in reports as his wife and mother, come outside and try to stop the attack. The assailant continues striking Maideen and pushes one of the women during the struggle.

Other men can be seen near a scooter as the confrontation unfolds. Initial descriptions of the footage said the two accomplices began preparing the scooter while Maideen was still being attacked. The group then left the area together on the vehicle.

Reports on the injuries said the bottle was broken and used to stab Maideen in the head, chest and other parts of his body. He was first taken to the government hospital in Muthupettai for emergency treatment and was then transferred to Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital. Early and follow-up reports described his injuries as serious, with initial coverage saying he was in critical condition.

Police identified Abdul Basith, 20, as the principal accused in the assault. He was arrested after the attack and remanded to judicial custody. Police said Muthupettai Police Station registered Crime No. 156/2026 under Sections 296(b), 118(1) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A later district police statement said the two remaining accused were also arrested and placed in judicial custody.

The police account directly rejected early claims that the assault was connected to marijuana use, a drug-related gang or Maideen's journalism. Officers said the incident arose from personal enmity. In explaining that position, police alleged that Maideen had been in contact with a woman connected to one of the men and had threatened her for money. Police said friends of the woman's relative went to Maideen's home to question him, an argument followed, and Basith attacked him with a bottle.

Those allegations concern events and communications that are not shown by the CCTV footage and remain allegations attributed to police. In its later statement, district police also asked media organizations and others not to circulate claims that the attackers were under the influence of marijuana or that the assault resulted from a drug-related dispute.

Maideen later disputed the police characterization. In comments reported after the attack, he said the allegations made against him were false and maintained that the men who attacked him were under the influence of marijuana. A separate later report said Maideen believed the attackers had mistaken him for another journalist associated with earlier drug-related reporting. Those explanations conflict with the police account, and the video itself does not resolve the motive.

The initial reporting also differed from the later police version over the reason Maideen stepped outside. Early accounts said the attacker sought his assistance with a police complaint, while police said the men had come to confront him over a personal matter. The footage clearly records Maideen outside the home immediately before the assault and captures the violence that follows, but it cannot independently establish the content of the conversation.

The Chennai Press Club condemned the attack and described it as an attempted murder, while calling for strict action against those responsible. The organization also urged the Tamil Nadu government to enact stronger protections for journalists and sought compensation for Maideen. Political figures in the state also condemned the assault.
