An elderly woman was killed when a garbage truck backed into her in a residential courtyard in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the morning of May 10, 2026. The driver was later charged with a traffic offense resulting in death by negligence and prohibited by a court from operating a vehicle.
The fatal pedestrian crash occurred at approximately 00:7:25 a.m. outside Building 27, Block 2, on Udarnikov Avenue in the city’s Krasnogvardeysky district.
Video from the residential area records the woman walking with a cane along the courtyard roadway behind the garbage truck. The vehicle begins reversing in her direction, strikes her and knocks her beneath it. The recording directly establishes that the truck was moving backward when the woman was hit.
The footage does not independently establish the truck’s exact speed or whether the driver could see the pedestrian from his position. Investigators later estimated that the truck was traveling backward at approximately 3 to 5 kilometers per hour, or about 2 to 3 mph.
According to the allegations presented to the court, the woman was walking behind the truck in the same direction as the reversing vehicle. Investigators placed her approximately 0.4 meters from the right edge of the courtyard roadway when the impact occurred.
The truck was traveling from the direction of Industrialny Avenue toward Nastavnikov Avenue. Authorities said the driver failed to make sure that reversing was safe and did not seek assistance from another person before beginning the maneuver.
The woman died at the scene from injuries caused by the collision. No medical intervention or hospitalization was reported before her death.
Initial information attributed to police described the victim as an 88-year-old woman. A later official court summary described her as an unidentified woman who appeared to be approximately 75 years old. The available official accounts therefore provide conflicting descriptions of her age, and a single age cannot be presented as conclusively established.
The garbage truck belonged to Eco Land, a waste management company operating in the area. The court identified the accused driver as 63-year-old Valery Shevelev.
Authorities opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 264 of the Russian Criminal Code, which covers violations of traffic rules or vehicle operation requirements that cause a person’s death through negligence.
Shevelev was formally charged on May 10, the same day as the crash. He was not detained under the criminal procedure provision cited in the court announcement. Investigators initially placed him under an obligation to appear when summoned.
The Krasnogvardeysky District Court considered a request for additional restrictions on May 12. Investigators asked the court to require Shevelev to appear when summoned by investigators, prosecutors or the court and to prohibit him from driving any motor vehicle until the restriction was modified or revoked.
Shevelev opposed the driving restriction and asked to retain his ability to operate vehicles because he worked as a driver. The court granted the investigators’ request and barred him from driving.
The official court statement said Shevelev fully admitted the allegation against him. His admission and the court-imposed restrictions do not constitute a final criminal conviction. The proceeding remained at the pretrial stage described in the May 12 announcement.
The court materials described the garbage truck as technically operational. No equipment failure was identified as a cause of the fatal collision in the information released publicly.
The available reports also did not attribute the crash to alcohol, drugs, excessive speed, poor weather or a medical emergency. The allegation presented against the driver focused on his failure to verify that the area behind the truck was clear before reversing.
The video confirms the physical sequence of the collision but does not establish every element of criminal responsibility. The estimate of the truck’s speed, the vehicle’s mechanical condition, the pedestrian’s position and the driver’s alleged failure to obtain assistance came from the investigative account submitted to the court.
The May 12 driving ban was the latest publicly documented court action located in the case. No final verdict or sentencing decision had been publicly reported in the materials reviewed as of July 25, 2026.
