A 55-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after a man punched her to the ground on a sidewalk in Charlotte, North Carolina, in an attack captured on video and later circulated widely on social media.
The assault occurred July 30 in the 400 block of East Boulevard. The footage records a woman walking along the sidewalk carrying a balloon as a man approaches her. He tells her not to wave at him, then punches her, sending her hard onto the pavement. She remains on the ground while he stands over her, continues yelling and asks, “You still talking?” The man then leaves the area.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the woman was struck in the face and head. She was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A nearby worker who encountered the aftermath said he saw the woman lying on the ground and immediately called police. He remained with her until emergency personnel arrived. According to his account, the woman was conscious enough to communicate and wanted to contact her husband.
A nearby business owner later said he spoke with the victim's husband and was told that she had returned home and was recovering from her injuries.
Businesses along East Boulevard also provided investigators with surveillance footage from the area. One business said its cameras recorded the man walking along East Boulevard shortly before the assault, and neighboring businesses were contacted so additional footage could be made available to police.
The police investigation expanded after officers were shown a social media account containing multiple videos that detectives were already examining.
At approximately 00:10:01 a.m. on Aug. 6, officers responded to an attempt-to-locate call in the 800 block of East 4th Street. Investigators determined that one of the videos on the account depicted the July 30 East Boulevard assault.
Detectives identified the suspect as Di-Quan Schafar Hunt, 32, and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Police took Hunt into custody at approximately 00:7:30 p.m. on Aug. 6. He was transported to a local medical facility for treatment. Authorities said that after his release from the facility, he would be transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
The police statement announcing the arrest did not identify a weapon or other instrument involved in the July 30 attack and did not explain what specifically formed the basis for the assault with a deadly weapon charge. The publicly circulated footage of the sidewalk attack clearly records the punch and the woman's fall, but no separate weapon should be inferred from the charge without additional information from investigators or court records.
Police also asked anyone with information about other incidents connected to the social media account or videos posted through the account to contact Crime Stoppers. Detective Taylor was identified as the lead investigator, and the July 30 case was assigned report number 20260730-0847-00.
Later reporting on Aug. 7 indicated that Hunt had not yet made his first appearance before a judge by late Friday afternoon.
Public arrest and court records show that Hunt had multiple previous encounters with the criminal justice system before the July 30 attack.
In one December 2025 case, Hunt was accused of threatening a man at a Charlotte transit stop. Court records show that he ultimately pleaded guilty on March 18, 2026, to assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. He had spent 89 days in the Mecklenburg County jail following his December arrest and was sentenced to time served, resulting in his release on the day of sentencing.
Other arrest records reviewed after the latest attack showed multiple prior arrests in Mecklenburg County during the preceding years, including cases involving assault allegations, threats and other offenses. Those prior arrests should not be treated as convictions unless a court disposition establishes guilt.
The current July 30 case is separate from those earlier proceedings. Police have publicly identified Hunt as the suspect, confirmed his arrest and stated that he is expected to face an assault with a deadly weapon charge in connection with the East Boulevard attack.
The victim's name has not been publicly released. The most recent information available Friday indicated that the 55-year-old woman had left the hospital and was recovering at home.
