Man survives point-blank gunshot and being run over during jewelry store robbery in Campinas, Brazil.

NEWS:

A man survived being shot in the forehead at point-blank range and run over by a getaway car while trying to stop armed robbers fleeing a jewelry store in downtown Campinas, Brazil.

The April 28, 2026, attack was recorded by surveillance cameras on Rua Dr. Costa Aguiar. The victim was later identified as André Anderson da Silveira, a maintenance technician who was among several people reacting to the robbery.

The footage shows a white Fiat Uno positioned on the street as the robbers attempt to escape. Silveira approaches the front of the vehicle and places himself in its path. A man near the car raises a handgun and fires directly at him from close range.

Silveira falls backward after being struck. The vehicle then moves forward and runs over him as the group escapes. The images confirm both the shooting and the collision but do not show what Silveira knew about the robbery before approaching the car or any conversation between him and the attackers.

Police said three armed men participated in the crime. Two entered a jewelry business near the intersection of Rua Dr. Costa Aguiar and Rua Álvares Machado, while the third waited with the getaway vehicle.

Investigators said the group stole 30 pieces of gold and silver jewelry, including rings, pendants, chains, wedding bands and bracelets. A wristwatch and two cellphones were also taken. Police valued the stolen merchandise at approximately R$32,500.

People on the street began shouting that a robbery was underway as the men ran toward the Fiat. According to the police account, Silveira moved in front of the car in an attempt to prevent the group from leaving.

The bullet struck the front of Silveira’s head. Military Police said the shot traveled across his forehead but did not penetrate his skull. A video recorded during his treatment shows him conscious while a police officer reports that his vital signs were stable.

Another recording made shortly after the attack shows Silveira lying on the sidewalk while conscious. Firefighters provided emergency assistance and transported him to Dr. Mário Gatti Municipal Hospital.

Silveira underwent surgery lasting approximately seven hours. He was discharged on April 30, about 48 hours after the shooting and vehicle impact.

In a later account, Silveira said he felt the force of the shot and heard ringing before falling backward. His vision temporarily turned white and then gradually returned. He said a physician told him that the thickness of his frontal bone helped prevent the projectile from entering the skull.

Images recorded after his discharge showed bandages covering part of his head and bruising associated with the attack and the collision. Despite the close-range gunshot, surgery and impact from the car, he was able to leave the hospital two days after the crime.

Military Police located the white Fiat on Avenida João Jorge, in the Vila Industrial area, roughly two hours after the robbery. The occupants abandoned the vehicle and attempted to continue their escape on foot.

Officers arrested Haniel Machado Santos, 24, and Victor Hugo da Silva Soares, 20. They were taken to the 1st Police District in Campinas, where the case was registered. Police said both men had previous records involving robbery.

All of the merchandise taken from the jewelry store was recovered, according to investigators. The vehicle used in the escape was also seized.

The man accused of firing the shot escaped from the area on foot. Police said he discarded a .38-caliber revolver inside an eyewear store on Avenida Senador Saraiva. Officers recovered the weapon.

On May 1, the Civil Police released additional images of the wanted man in an effort to identify his location. Investigators said his first name was Gabriel and that he was known by the nickname “Bafo.”

The two arrested suspects supplied the name and nickname used by investigators, according to the officer responsible for the inquiry. Police did not release a verified full name for the fugitive in the publicly available information reviewed for this report.

The investigation was led by delegate Daniel Pirro Cerzosimo of the 1st Police District. He said Gabriel was wanted in connection with attempted latrocínio, the Brazilian criminal classification applied to an attempted killing committed during a robbery.

Investigators also examined whether the wanted man may have participated in other robberies in downtown Campinas. Police had not publicly established his involvement in any additional crime at the time the images were released.

Public reports differ on two secondary details. Initial coverage placed the robbery at approximately 4 p.m., while a later police-attributed account stated that the attackers entered the store at about 2 p.m. Reports also listed Silveira as either 46 or 47 years old.

No publicly available police document reviewed for this article resolved those discrepancies. The confirmed sequence remains that the robbery occurred during the afternoon of April 28, Silveira was shot and run over while blocking the escape, two suspects were arrested the same day, the weapon and stolen property were recovered, and Silveira left the hospital on April 30.

No public announcement confirming Gabriel’s arrest was located through June 13, 2026. The Civil Police asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the anonymous crime-reporting service by dialing 181.
