Cyclist chases and shoots homeless recycler in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil.

NEWS:

A homeless recycler was chased and shot by a cyclist in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, after what police described as an earlier dispute over recyclable materials.

The victim was identified as Marcelo Santos Borges, 41. The shooting happened on April 6 on Rua Coronel Francisco Soares, in the center of Nova Iguaçu, near Via Light. Security camera footage recorded the attack in broad daylight.

The video shows a man on a bicycle approaching Borges on the street and opening fire. Borges tries to run as the gunman continues shooting. The footage shows the attacker pursuing him while firing multiple rounds. Borges then falls to the ground after being hit.

Initial reports said the shooter fired at least eight times. Other reports said Borges was struck five times. The visible video confirms that the attacker fired repeatedly, but the exact number of shots that hit the victim comes from police, hospital and press accounts rather than from the footage alone.

After the shooting, Borges remained on the ground while vehicles continued passing through the street. Other recordings made by pedestrians showed him conscious and in pain while waiting for help.

Military police officers from the 20th BPM in Mesquita went to the scene after being called about an attempted homicide. When officers arrived, they were told that the victim had already been taken for medical care by firefighters.

The Nova Iguaçu Fire Department was called at around 00:2:30 p.m. for a firearm injury. Firefighters said a man was treated at the scene in serious condition. The victim was taken by other means to Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu, also known as HGNI.

Borges arrived at the hospital with gunshot injuries reported in the abdomen, left thigh and left forearm. Hospital officials said he underwent emergency surgery after arriving at the unit. His condition was described as serious but stable in the first reports.

A later update said Borges remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit after surgery. Another report later said he was out of immediate life-threatening danger. The most cautious confirmed position is that he survived the attack, required emergency surgery and remained under medical care after the shooting.

The case is being investigated by the 52nd Police Precinct in Nova Iguaçu. Investigators reviewed security camera footage and carried out additional inquiries after the attack.

Police later identified the suspected shooter. According to the investigation, the shooting was linked to a confrontation that began days earlier. Borges, who lived on the street and worked collecting recyclable materials, had been looking for recyclables in front of a house in Nova Iguaçu. Residents reportedly became angry because trash had been disturbed, and an argument began.

The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation. Police said that after the fight, a man left the property and shot Borges in the leg. That earlier episode was also registered with authorities.

Two days later, Borges was attacked again when the same man allegedly encountered him in the street. Security footage from the second attack shows the cyclist following Borges and firing as Borges tries to escape.

Police went to the hospital after the shooting to take Borges’ statement. Investigators said the victim identified the man who shot him. During the inquiry, the suspect’s brother also told police he recognized his relative after seeing the security camera footage circulating online.

The suspected shooter was later identified in reporting as Glauber da Costa Silva. He was not found after the attack and was considered a fugitive. Police requested his preventive arrest and asked the public for information about his location.

The confirmed video evidence shows the second attack: a cyclist chasing Borges and firing several times on a public street. It does not independently show the full earlier dispute over recyclable materials, the first shooting episode or the motive. Those details come from the police investigation and later reporting on the case.

The available information points to a targeted attempted homicide rather than a random shooting. Police attributed the attack to an earlier conflict, but the full legal determination of motive and responsibility depends on the investigation and any later court proceedings.
