Wrong-way motorcyclist crashes into pickup during police chase in Monte Carmelo, Brazil.
NEWS:
A 22-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured after riding the wrong way and crashing head-on into a pickup truck during a police chase in Monte Carmelo, Brazil, on Thursday night, April 16.
Military Police said the case began around 00:8:35 p.m. during routine patrol in the Vila Nova neighborhood. Officers on motorcycle patrol saw the rider performing dangerous maneuvers in the street, including balancing the motorcycle on one wheel, a stunt commonly known in Brazil as “grau.”
According to police, the motorcycle was also missing rearview mirrors and had a partially unreadable license plate. Officers ordered the rider to stop, but he disobeyed and fled at high speed.
Police said the rider crossed several parts of the city during the chase, including Vila Nova, Montreal and the central area of Monte Carmelo. During the pursuit, he allegedly ran stop signs and red lights and entered streets against traffic, putting other drivers and pedestrians at risk.
The crash happened near the central area of the city, close to the Main Church, at the intersection involving Rua João Pessoa and Rua Tito Fulgêncio. Police said the motorcyclist entered both streets the wrong way before colliding head-on with a VW Amarok pickup that was traveling regularly.
Video from the scene shows the motorcycle moving against the flow of traffic before the impact with the pickup. The footage records the moment of the crash and shows the rider being thrown after the collision. The motorcycle also struck a parked vehicle after the first impact.
The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, with signs of multiple fractures. He received first aid from a SAMU emergency team and was taken for medical care. Reports attributed to police said he was later transferred to the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Uberlândia for specialized treatment.
According to the initial police assessment reported after the crash, the rider was in stable condition but confused. No later confirmed medical update was found in the material reviewed.
The driver of the pickup was not injured.
Civil Police forensics were called to the crash scene and carried out technical work at the location. The motorcycle was removed to an accredited impound lot, while the other vehicles were released after their regular status was checked.
Police also reported that system checks showed previous records involving similar cases of dangerous driving and traffic accidents linked to the motorcyclist.
