Woman and newborn found dead in buried sack in Tangail, Bangladesh.
NEWS:
An unidentified woman and a newborn were found dead in a buried sack on the bank of the Louhajang River in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, Bangladesh, after residents reported a foul smell in the area.
The bodies were recovered on April 20, 2026, near a bridge in Gunotia village, Jamurki union. Police were called after local residents noticed the smell and saw part of a woman’s hair exposed near the ground. According to the police account reported from the scene, officers dug into the soil and found the woman’s body and the newborn’s body inside a sack.
A video shared on social media shows the woman’s body on the ground and the body of a newborn lying a short distance away. The footage directly shows the presence of both bodies at the scene. It does not prove the motive, the identity of the person or people responsible, or the exact sequence of the killing.
Initial social media posts claimed that the woman had been gang raped and killed in a village in Tangail. Police later warned that sensitive claims about the case should be verified before being shared. A later medical account stated that doctors found evidence that the woman had been strangled, but found no signs of rape.
The woman was believed to be about seven to eight months pregnant. Police said the newborn was found with her when the body was dug out. Investigators also said they believed the baby may have been delivered around the time of the woman’s death.
The woman was estimated to be around 30 years old. Her identity had not been confirmed six days after the recovery of the bodies. The newborn also remained unidentified.
The bodies were decomposed when they were found. Police said they believed the woman and child had died about nine to 10 days before the recovery. Earlier reports cited police as saying the condition of the bodies suggested that the woman had been killed and buried days before they were found.
During the inquest, investigators found cloth wrapped around the woman’s neck, according to a later report citing the investigating officer. The same account said muscle tissue was missing from her right hand, apparently because of animal damage after burial. That detail was presented as an observation made during the recovery and inquest, not as a cause of death.
A residential medical officer at Tangail General Hospital later said the autopsy found evidence of strangulation. He also said no signs of rape were found. DNA samples were collected, but fingerprints could not be taken because of the condition of the body.
The bodies were sent for autopsy after the recovery. They were later buried as unclaimed at Mirzapur municipal graveyard under the management of Anjuman Mufidul Islam.
A murder case was filed at Mirzapur Police Station against unidentified persons, according to the local police account reported after the autopsy findings. Police said efforts were underway to identify the woman and newborn and to identify those involved in the killing.
The confirmed record of the case shows that two bodies were recovered from a buried sack, the woman was believed to have been pregnant, the newborn was found with her, the bodies were decomposed, and later medical findings pointed to strangulation of the woman with no signs of rape. The identities of the victims and the full circumstances of the killing had not been publicly confirmed in the available reports.
